Rocky Face, Ga. – James Clark shot an even-par 72 Saturday to pace Georgia Tech, which posted an 8-over-par team score of 296 and dropped to third place after 36 holes at the 27th Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.

TEAM LEADERBOARD — Alabama, ranked 23rd in the nation, matched its opening-round 289 Saturday and moved into the lead after 36 holes at 578 (+2), three strokes ahead of Auburn (581, +5), which navigated The Farm Golf Club in even-par 288 Saturday. Georgia Tech’s 296 Saturday left the Yellow Jackets another stroke back in third place at 582 (+6). Only Clemson (287, -1) shot an under-par score as a team Saturday and is in fourth place at 583 (+7), followed by South Carolina at 584 (+8).

Tech is grouped with Alabama and Auburn for Sunday’s final round, teeing off at 9:30 a.m.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD — Clemson’s Steven Behr shot a 3-under-par 69, while Alabama’s Davis Riley carded a 70, putting them in a tie atop the leaderboard at 5-under-par 139. Tech’s Jacob Joiner followed his opening round 66 with a 74 Saturday and dropped into third place individually at 4-under 140. Auburn’s Michael Johnson (3-under 141) is in fourth place, followed by four players in a tie for fifth at 143 (-1).

TECH LINEUP — Clark’s 72 Saturday included three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. The Yellow Jackets also counted Joiner’s 74 and a pair of 75s from Vincent Whaley and Chris Petefish. Petefish us tied for 14th place individually at 146 (+2), while Clark is tied for 17th at 147 (+3). Freshman Tyler Joiner did not count after posting a 77, and sophomore Michael Hines shot 76 competing as an individual.

The Jackets held onto their lead into the back nine and were 4-under-par for the tournament at one point, but lost eight shots to par over the six finishing holes.

COACH Bruce Heppler SAYS — “Once we got to the 13th tee, things got more difficult with the prevailing wind today. We made a couple of bogeys at 13, a tough par 3, and a couple at 14. We got a couple of birdies on the last hole to finish. But there’s a lot more good than bad with where we are. We’ve got a bunch of young guys grinding it out and learning how to manage. We’re in the final groups tomorrow, and Jacob Joiner is in contention individually.”

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION — The Carpet Capital Collegiate concludes Sunday at The Farm Golf Club, a 7,012-yard, par 72 layout designed by Tom Fazio near Dalton, Ga. The Yellow Jackets have been the institutional host of this event since its inception in 1989, winning seven times. Tech finished second last year to South Carolina after winning the event in 2013. The field maintains its predominantly ACC (Clemson, Tech, North Carolina) and SEC (Auburn, Alabama, Florida, LSU, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee) flavor, and has six 2014 NCAA Championship teams in the 15-team field, including defending champion LSU.
