Tech Tied for 3rd at PING/Preview invitational
Sept. 23, 2012
Alpharetta, Ga. - Bo Andrews shot an even-par 70 and Anders Albertson added a 71 Sunday, pacing fourth-ranked Georgia Tech to a 7-over-par 287, tied for third place and six shots off the lead after the opening round of the PING/Golfweek Preview Invitational at the Capital City Club Crabapple.
Tech played consistent golf Sunday over the 7,246-yard, par-70 layout, which will be the host venue for the NCAA Division I Championship next May 28-June 2. Ollie Schniederjans and Seth Reeves each came in at 73 (+3), while freshman Michael Hines was the non-counter for the Yellow Jackets with a 75 in his collegiate debut.
The Crabapple Course demonstrated its toughness with winds consistently blowing more than 10 miles per hour Sunday, harder in some areas of the back nine, helping keep every team over par for the day. UNLV, ranked 15th, turned in the best opening round with a 281 (+1), followed by No. 5 UCLA (282). Tech, No. 18 New Mexico and San Diego State, the only team in the field not ranked among the nation's top 25, are tied for third.
"Our guys did a nice job of hanging around today," said Tech coach Bruce Heppler. "We didn't have a great start, but played the fourth through the 18th fairly well. Holes 14 through 18 is a really tough stretch with today's wind. The golf course is in great shape."
No. 7 Arkansas and No. 17 Georgia are tied for sixth at 288 (+8), while 6th-ranked Washington and No. 2 California are tied for eighth.
Only six individuals broke par Sunday, and the day's best round belonged to San Diego State's Tom Berry, a 3-under-par 67. UNLV's Kurt Kitayama, Chattanooga's Chris Robb and Arkansas' Taylor Moore shot 68, while Washington's Chris Williams and UCLA's Pedro Figueiredo were tied at 69.
Andrews matched three other players with his 70 and is tied for seventh place, three shots off the pace, while Albertson is in a large group of players tied for 11th place at 71.
Fourteen of the 15 teams at this year's Preview are listed among the Golfweek's pre-season top 25 in the nation, including top-ranked Alabama and No. 3 Texas, who faced each other in the finals of the match play portion of the NCAA Championship last year. The Longhorns, who prevailed, are tied for 10th place, while the Crimson Tide are tied for 13th.
Admission is free all three days of the Preview. Tee times begin at 9 a.m. Monday and 8:30 a.m. for Tuesday's final round. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.
