Tech in Fifth After Opening Round of Brickyard Collegiate

Macon, Ga. – fired a 1-under-par 71, and added an even-par 72, leading 15th-ranked Georgia Tech to a team total of 1-over-par 289 and fifth place after the opening round of the Brickyard Collegiate golf tournament.

Tech opened defense of its 2011 title in the event by getting 1-over-par 73s from and , and the Yellow Jackets are nine strokes behind 4th-ranked Georgia, which shot 8-uner 280 and took a three-stroke lead over North Florida (283). Princeton is in third place at 286, followed by Kansas (288) and Tech (289) on the 7,175-yard, par 72 Brickyard at Riverside course.

Colorado State, coached by former Tech assistant , is in eighth place at 293, while 2010 and 2011 NCAA Champion Augusta State is ninth at 295, and host Mercer is in 10th at 296. Oklahoma, which rallied late to take the fifth and final qualifying spot from Tech at last year’s NCAA Norman Regional, is in 11th place at 299.

Reeves, a junior from Duluth, Ga., was 1-over-par at the turn but made two birdies and seven pars on the back nine. Albertson, a sophomore from Woodstock, Ga., overcame a triple bogey at No. 8 with five birdies to get into the clubhouse at even par. Reeves and Albertson tied for second place last year in leading Tech to a 17-shot victory at the Brickyard.

“We got off to a slow start and were in pretty bad shape after nine holes,” said head coach . “Our guys really hung tough and played well on the back. They are looking forward to the final 36.”

Freshman , competing as an individual, fired a 3-under-par 69 and is tied for second place with six other golfers, one stroke behind Georgia’s Nick Reach. Hines also shot 69 last week in the final round of the PING-Golfweek Preview Invitational, helping the Jackets to a share of the title. Reeves is tied for 12th place, Albertson tied for 19th.
