Vestavia Hills, Ala. – Ollie Schniederjans fired a pair of 67s Monday and is tied for the individual lead, and Georgia Tech is tied for second place in the team race after 36 holes of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.

Tech, ranked No. 2 in the nation in the latest golf coaches’ poll, posted team rounds of 285 and 278 Monday for a two-round total of 563 (+3) at the Old Overton Golf Club (7,209 yards, par 70). The Yellow Jackets are 10 strokes behind defending NCAA champion Alabama (553, -7) and tied with fourth-ranked Florida State. UAB, UNLV and Arkansas are tied for fourth place at 569 (+9).

The Jackets were 17 strokes behind the Crimson Tide, who behind four sub-70 rounds put up a 12-under-par 268 in the morning round. But Tech got a pair of even-par 70s from senior Drew Czuchry and freshman James Clark and a 71 from Anders Albertson in the afternoon to help close the gap. Alabama shot 285 (+5) in the afternoon, while Florida State shot 273 (-7).

“Our guys fought hard this afternoon on their last nine,” said head coach Bruce Heppler. “We’ve had a good low round in each of the first two events this fall, so I’m hoping we have another one in us for tomorrow. We probably missed some opportunities to post a better score in this morning’s round.”

Schniederjans, bidding for his second win of the fall and seventh in the last 14 months, played his first nine holes of the day 5-under-par before settling back for his first 67 in the morning round. In the afternoon, the senior from Powder Springs, Ga., played a much steadier round with four birdies and just one bogey. He is tied with the Seminoles’ Hank Lebioda (68-66) and Mississippi State’s Ben Wood (71-63) at 6-under-par 134 heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Albertson, a senior from Woodstock, Ga., with two top-20 finishes this fall, shot 70 in the morning and is part of a group of 10 players tied for 10th place at 141 (+1). Czuchry (Auburn, Ga.), who shot 74 in the morning, is tied for 23rd place at 144 (+4), while Clark (Columbus, Ga.), is tied for 29th place at 145 (+5). Sophomore Michael Hines is tied for 43rd after rounds of 74-75.

Tech. Alabama and Florida State are paired together in the final groups for Tuesday’s final round, teeing off at 9:50 a.m. Eastern time.
