Nov. 3, 2014

Princeville, Hawai’i – All-American Ollie Schniederjans fired a 6-under-par 66 Monday, leading four Georgia Tech players under par as the Yellow Jackets grabbed the first-round lead at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational at the Makai Golf Club in Princeville, Hawai’i.

The 11th-ranked Jackets started their final fall season event strong, with Anders Albertson and Michael Hines each shooting 4-under-par 68, and freshman Chris Petefish adding a 2-under 70 as Tech posted a team total of 272 (-16). Mississippi (273, -15) is a scant shot back, followed by San Diego (274, -14), 28th-ranked Arizona State (277, -11) and Cal Poly (280, -8).

Ten of the 15 teams in the field broke par on the 7,223-yard, par 72 Makai Golf Club, as did 32 of the 84 individuals.

“It was nice to get off to a good start,” said Tech coach Bruce Heppler. “When our seniors play well, we have a chance to be a good team. Ten-under from them today is a good place to start.”

Schniederjans, the world’s top-ranked amateur, had eight birdies and two bogeys on his card Monday in posting his best opening round of the fall. The Powder Springs, Ga., senior is two shots back of Pepperdine’s Frederick Wedel (64, -8), with San Diego’s Grant Forrest holding second place after a 65 (-7).

Albertson, a senior from Woodstock, Ga., played a nearly clean round, getting five birdies against one bogey for his second-best round of the fall. The 68 for Hines was the best round of the fall for the sophomore from Acworth, Ga. He bounced back from a double bogey at 15 to get record two birdies, an eagle and a par over his last four holes. They are tied for 12th place individually. Freshman Chris Petefish (Danville, Calif.) closed his 70 with a pair of birdies in his final three holes.

“I was really proud of Michael Hines today,” said Heppler. “He made a double on 15 and came back with a birdie at 17, an eagle at 18 and a birdie on one to finish his round.”

Round two begins at 1:30 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday with a shotgun start.
