THE FLATS – Georgia Tech’s golf team has made a trip to Hawai’i to open its spring season every year since 1998, and are doing so again this spring when the Yellow Jackets begin competition against 19 other teams in the Amer Ari Invitational at the Waikoloa Village Resort.

The 54-hole event begins Thursday and runs through Saturday at the Waikoloa Kings’ Course, a 7,074-yard, par 72 layout near Kona on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Tech begins the spring ranked No. 2 in the nation behind Alabama after winning twice and finishing runner-up twice in its four fall events.

The field for the 54-hole event has always been large, but in recent years many of college golf’s heavyweights have populated the field, making it as difficult to win as any the Yellow Jackets play. Tech won this tournament five times between 1999 and 2006, but has finished no higher than fourth in the last seven years.

The 20-team field this year includes many of college golf’s top teams, including Arizona State (34), Auburn (28), Colorado, Oklahoma State (3), Oregon, Oregon State (49), Southern California (22), Stanford (9), Texas (18), TCU, Texas Tech, UCLA (16) and Washington (13), six of whom are ranked among the nation’s top 25 teams.

Three of Tech’s players, Ollie Schniederjans (5), Anders Albertson (24) and Seth Reeves (28) are ranked among the nation’s top 30 individuals. Schniederjans, a junior from Powder Springs, Ga., and Reeves, a senior from Duluth, Ga., each won twice in the fall, while Albertson, a junior from Woodstock, Ga., posted three top-5 finishes.

They will make the trip to the Big Island along with Bo Andrews, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., and Vincent Whaley, a freshman from McKinney, Texas, who earned the spot in the team’s 72-hole qualifying tournament last week. Whaley played in two fall events as an individual, and is making his debut as a counting member of the travel team.
