Nissan #ProJackets Golf Report

May 24, 2016

THE FLATS – “I just kind of hit the ball, found it, and hit it again,” Richy Werenski said to Scott Keepfer of the Greenville News following his second consecutive 6-under-par 65 on Sunday that allowed the former Georgia Tech standout to come from behind and earn his first victory on the Web.com Tour, a two-stroke win over a trio of players at the BMW Charity Pro-Am in Greer, S.C.

On a day when seven different players held the lead or at least a share of the lead, Werenski finally broke free of a logjam atop the leaderboard by posting birdies on back-to-back par 5s at Nos. 15 and 16.

Werenski, who didn’t win a college tournament but did capture the title at one of the nation’s premier amateur events, the Porter Cup, during his time on the Flats, bogeyed only one hole and made 13 birdies over the final 36 holes. He pushed through for his first victory after posting a couple of runner-up finishes earlier in the year. The 2013 graduate moved up to second on the 2016 money list with $258,958 and assured himself of getting his PGA Tour card for 2016-17.

“The last couple of times I might’ve tried to push too hard for a win, and you can’t do that,” who finished with a 21-under total of 265. “You learn yourself and how you deal with pressure and you try to get better at that. But I figured it was just a matter of time, and hopefully things would fall into place.”

Troy Matteson was the only other former Yellow Jacket to make the cut, tying for 52nd place, while Anders Albertson, Ollie Schniederjans and Kyle Scott all missed the cut. Schniederjans remains in 10th place in earnings, and Albertson is 24th. The top 25 on that list at the end of the season earn PGA Tour status next season.

PGA Tour: Matt Kuchar continued his climb up the FedEx Cup points list, moving up to No. 26 after this weekend’s performance in which he shot 65-67-65-69 to finish at 14-under-par 266, one shot out of a playoff between Sergio Garcia and Brooks Koepka. Kuchar now has four top-10 finishes in his last six events.

Bryce Molder also continued to move up the FedEx Cup list, checking in at No. 54 after his tie for 24th last weekend at the Byron Nelson. Molder was in the top 10 after 54 holes but shot 72 on Sunday to fall back.

In the final round of the 2016 AT&T Byron Nelson, Matt Kuchar hits a wonderful bunker shot from 88 feet leaving it within 3 feet for a short kick-in birdie putt on the par-5 16th hole.

PGA Tour Champions: In the Champions Tour’s first major of 2016, Larry Mize turned in his highest finish of the year, tying for seventh place in the Regions Tradition, held at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham, Ala. Mize, the 1987 Masters Champion, was steady with rounds of 70-69-71-71 for a 7-under-par total of 281. Bernhard Langer won the title with a 17-under-par 271.

MacKenzie Tour: Seth Reeves makes his debut this weekend in the PGA Canadian Tour’s season-opening event, the Freedom 55 Financial Open in Vancouver, British Columbia. Reeves won medalist honors one of the Tour’s qualifying schools and full tour status for 2016. Since then, he has also played well in SwingThough.com Tour series events and stands third on that tour’s money list.
