@GT_Golf - #ProJackets Update

June 24, 2015

THE FLATS – Matt Kuchar tied his career-best finish with a tie for 12th at the 115th U.S. Open Championship last weekend at Chambers Bay, while recent graduate Ollie Schniederjans tied for 42nd place and Cameron Tringale tied for 54th.

The three former Yellow Jackets who played on the weekend tied for most of any Division I golf program in the nation. A fourth Tech alumnus, Roberto Castro, missed the 36-hole cut by two strokes.

Kuchar, who also tied for 12th last year at Pinehurst, N.C., opened with a 67 and closed with a 69, and lacked one shot of finishing in the top 10 and thereby earning an exemption into next year’s U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club.

Schniederjans, a two-time All-American at Tech who graduated in May, was solid throughout the weekend, firing rounds of 69-73-72-72 for a 7-over-par total of 287, tying Virginia’s Denny McCarthy as the second-low amateur. He ranked third in the field in driving distance at more than 332 yards and was seventh in birdies.

The only other circuits which conducted a tournament last weekend were the eGolf Tour, where 2014 graduate Bo Andrews posted his best finish – second place – with an 11-under-par total of 205, and the SwingThought.com Tour, where John-Tyler Griffin tied for 11th (-11) and Anders Albertson, who tied for 15th (-10) in his professional debut.

The rest of the tours resume their schedules this weekend, with the PGA Tour stopping in Cromwell, Conn., for the Travelers Championship, where two-time champion Stewart Cink (1997, 2008) is in the field with Castro, Bryce Molder and Nicholas Thompson. Troy Matteson and David Duval are alternates.

Former Tech players have accumulated more than $5.4 million in PGA Tour earnings this season, and six Yellow Jackets are currently among the top 125 in FedEx Cup points, which gets them into the first event in the playoffs. Matt Kuchar leads the group at No. 26, followed by Cameron Tringale (40), Chesson Hadley (64), Bryce Molder (99), Nicholas Thompson (117) and Cink (120).

Ollie Schniederjans update: The 2015 graduate will remain an amateur through the Open Championship, July 16-19 at St. Andrews, Scotland, where he has an exemption from having won the Mark H McCormack Medal last year. Schniederjans will travel overseas to play in the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open the week before. After the Open Championship, he will begin playing as a professional.
