Nissan #ProJackets Golf Report

June 29, 2016

THE FLATS - Ollie Schniederjans rolled in an 18-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole to defeat former Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada Order of Merit winner J.J. Spaun and PAC-12 freshman of the year Collin Morikawa in a playoff at the Air Capital Classic presented by AETNA. The 23-year-old Schniederjans’ first Web.com Tour win moves him up to No. 3 on the money list.

“I felt like it was probably a 20 percent chance of making it,” said Schniederjans, about the 18-foot left-to-right putt. “I just wanted to pure the heck out of it and see what happens. It went in beautifully; it was incredible.”

With the putt, the former Tech All-American evened his playoff record for 2016 at 1-1, having lost one to Brad Fritsch at the Servientrega Championship in Colombia earlier this season. He also became the second former Tech player to win on the Web.com Tour this year, joining Richy Werenski, who won the BMW Charity Pro-Am in May. Like Werenski, who is No. 2 on the Web.com Tour money list, Schniederjans earned $112,500 to virtually guarantee himself a spot in the Tour’s top 25 money winners at the end of the season and a PGA Tour card for 2016-17.

Schniederjans played the last 46 holes of the Air Capital Classic without making a bogey to earn his first victory in his 11th start this season. He is the ninth first-time winner this season. At age 23 years, 11 days, he became the youngest winner on Tour this season, and his victory is the 22nd on Tour by a Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket. Schniederjans tied the course record at with a bogey-free 61 on Saturday (Gavin Coles – 2006). The 9-under score was his lowest round on Tour. His first Tour start came back at the 2014 Air Capital Classic, where he carded 64-71-65-67—267 (13-under) for a T5 as an amateur.

His Tech teammate, Anders Albertson, continued to battle his way toward the top 25, tying for 39th place, but slipped to 38th on the money list. Werenski, Troy Matteson and Matt Weibring missed the cut.

The Web.com Tour takes this weekend off, but returns to action in New York state July 7-10 for the LECOM Health Challenge, where Nicholas Thompson returns to competition after a long layoff after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee. Thompson, who played in a U.S. Open sectional qualifier three weeks ago, plans to play five Web.com Tour events in the next seven weeks. PGA Tour: Only three Tech alums were in the field last weekend for the Quicken Loans National, where Roberto Castro (T-62) and Chesson Hadley (T-64) both took home checks while Cameron Tringale missed the cut. Castro was playing for the first time since tying for 11th at the Memorial Tournament.

The PGA Tour splits this week, with Matt Kuchar playing in the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio, while Hadley, Tringale, Troy Matteson and Bryce Molder play in the Barracuda Championship in Reno, Nev., which uses a modified Stableford scoring format.

MacKenzie Tour: Seth Reeves missed his first cut in four events this summer on the MacKenzie Tour, carding rounds of 76-70. The Tour takes this week off before moving to Winnepeg next week.

Amateur update: Rising senior Vincent Whaley posted his second top-10 finish in three amateur events this summer, tying for seventh play at the Northeast Amateur last weekend in Rumford, R.I. He shot 3-under-par 273 on the par-69 Wannamoisett Country Club. Whaley earlier tied for eighth at the Monroe Invitational. Several Yellow Jackets are in the field for this week’s Dogwood Invitational at Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta, which begins Wednesday.
