Incoming @GT_GOLF Freshmen Score Wins

July 25, 2016

THE FLATS – Andy Ogletree and Luke Schniederjans, incoming freshmen for Georgia Tech’s golf team, served some notice that they’ll be forces to be reckoned with by capturing amateur victories last week.

Ogletree, ranked 25th nationally in the Junior Golf Scoreboard and the top-rated junior player in Mississippi, scored a wire-to-wire victory at last weekend’s Cardinal Amateur, played at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. The incoming freshman shot rounds of 65-70-67 (202, -8), pulling away on Sunday for a five-stroke victory over a trio of competitors. The future Yellow Jacket birdied his first two holes Sunday before giving both shots back with bogeys on Nos. 8 and 9. But Ogletree birdied the 13th hole and then eagled the par-5 15th to put the contest away.

The Little Rock, Miss., native also tied for 13th earlier this summer at the Southeastern Amateur in Columbus, Ga., and tied for 36th at the Sage Valley Junior Invitational in the spring.

Meanwhile, the younger brother of three-time Tech All-American Ollie Schniederjans is beginning to make a name for himself. The Harrison High School star, after knocking on the door of a U.S. Open spot with an 11th place finish in his sectional qualifier, broke through and won the U.S. Amateur qualifier last week at Horseshoe Bend Country Club with rounds of 65-69. Schniederjans thus became the first, and only to this point, qualifier among the current Yellow Jacket team for the U.S. Amateur, which begins Aug. 15 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Schniederjans tied for 11th in stroke play and reached the semifinals of the 100th Georgia State Amateur earlier in July, and also tied for 10th place at the Dogwood Amateur.

GLORY’S LAST SHOT

Rising junior James Clark is Georgia Tech’s last hope for securing a second spot in the U.S. Amateur, attempting to qualify Monday and Tuesday at Newnan (Ga.) Country Club. Clark, from Columbus, Ga., is coming off a solid seventh-place finish at last weekend’s Palmetto Amateur in Aiken, S.C., firing a 3-under-par 277. Clark has had a busy summer, tying for sixth place at the Eastern Amateur, finishing 17th at the Southeastern Amateur and tying for 37th at the Dogwood Invitational.

Two other major amateur events are left on the summer schedule before the U.S. Amateur begins, and both involve rising Tech senior Vincent Whaley (McKinney, Texas). Whaley and incoming freshman Tyler Strafaci (Davie, Fla.) will compete in the prestigious Porter Cup in Lewiston, N.Y., beginning Wednesday. Current Web.com Tour player Richy Werenski won the Porter Cup in 2012. Whaley turns around quickly after that 72-hole event to play in the Western Amateur next week (Aug. 2-6) in Lake Forest, Ill. Whaley has a pair of top-10 finishes to his credit this summer, tying for eighth place at the Monroe Inivtational and seventh at the Northeast Amateur.
