@GT_GOLF in 7th at Kiawah Island

Kiawah Island, S.C. – James Clark and Jacob Joiner paced Georgia Tech’s team Sunday, each shooting 1-under-par 71, and the ninth-ranked Yellow Jackets are tied for seventh place after posting a 5-over-par 293 in the opening round of the Kiawah Classic by Aramark.

TECH LINEUP – Clark (Columbus, Ga.) and Joiner (Leesburg, Ga.) played steadily, combining for three bogeys, one double bogey, an eagle and five birdies in completing their 71s at Turtle Point Golf Club. Sophomore Chris Petefish (Danville, Calif.) added an even-par 72 with four birdies in his round.

But the Yellow Jackets had to count a 79 from junior Vincent Whaley (McKinney, Texas) while discarding an 83 from sophomore Michael Pisciotta (Alpharetta, Ga.).

TEAM LEADERBOARD – Host Charleston Southern was the only team to break par Sunday on the par 72 Turtle Point course, firing a 1-under-par 287. No. 22 Virginia and No, 33 Augusta University are tied for second place at 289 (+1). Missouri, Georgia Southern and Virginia Tech are tied for fourth place at 292 (+4), with sixth-ranked Duke and the Yellow Jackets another stroke back at 293 (+5).

INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD – R.J. Keur of host Charleston Southern fired a 4-under-par 68 along with Augusta’s Robin Petersson and Radford’s Nick Brediger to share the first-round lead. Virginia Tech’s Joey Lane holds fourth place alone after firing a 69 (-3), while Charleston’s William Rainey is tied with three others at 70 (-2).

Clark and Joiner are in a seven-player group at 71. Fifteen players in the 116-player field broke par on Sunday.

COACH Bruce Heppler SAYS – “We had three good scores today, but that’s not enough. We had no wind, so there were some good scores out there to be had. The course is very demanding, so we’re looking forward to the challenge the next two days.”

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION – Georgia Tech is making its first-ever appearance in the Kiawah Classic, played at the 7,061-yard, par 72 Turtle Point Golf Club at Kiawah Island, S.C. The tournament is a 54-hole event, 18 holes each day, with play beginning at 6:30 a.m. Sunday and Monday and 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The 22-team field includes No. 22 Virginia and Virginia Tech (86) from the Atlantic Coast Conference as well as host Charleston Southern (61), Augusta (33), Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern (77), Jacksonville State, Louisiana-Monroe, Loyola of Maryland (88), Maryland (84), Missouri (71), Presbyterian, Radford, Richmond and USC Upstate.
