A former tennis standout at Georgia Tech during his playing career, Sergio Aguirre is in his first year as an assistant coach with the Yellow JacketsÂ' menÂ's tennis program. A native of Atlanta, whose family still lives in the city, Aguirre most recently has worked as a production assistant with Fox Sports Net South in Atlanta, will handle a number of duties with the Jackets, including coordinating recruiting and practices.

Â"I am extremely excited to be able to bring someone like Sergio onto our staff as he has already been a part of our program and understands what we are all about here at Georgia Tech,Â" said Thorne. Â"Sergio understandsÂ"the type of student-athlete that we want to recruit here at Tech, as he exemplified those attributes while he was here as a student. As a former winner of Georgia TechÂ's prestigious Â`Total Person Award,Â' I know he will do a great job and IÂ'm looking forward to this year with him.Â"

In his career at Georgia Tech, Aguirre helped lead the Yellow Jackets to three NCAA Tournament appearances and a runner-up finish in the 1999 ACC Tournament. One of the top doubles players in school history, he finished his career as TechÂ's all-time leader in career doubles victories with 82. Aguirre also holds the single-season record for doubles wins as he recorded 30 during the 1999 campaign. His 67 career singles wins also rank among the top 15 on the schoolÂ's all-time list.

Â"Sergio understands the game of tennis as well as anyone that I have coached and he relates extremely well with the student-athletes,Â" said Thorne He will bring a positive attitude and great work ethic to the position.Â"
