THE FLATS – Carlos Divar highlighted the four Georgia Tech men’s tennis singles wins in the second day of the MLK Invitational on Sunday when he defeated No. 19 Victor Pham of No. 23 Columbia.
The 85th-ranked sophomore opened up the match with a tough 6-4 victory in the first set, but Pham battled back and was able to return the favor in the second, winning 6-4 himself. In the third and deciding set, Divar faced a 4-5 deficit with Pham serving. But Divar battled back from a 30-0 to break and tie the set at five games apiece.
After Divar served out in the 11th game to retake the lead 6-5, Pham once again had serve and had forced a 40-15 lead. Once again, the Vitoria, Spain, native battled back to a 40-40 deuce. Divar took the opportunity to end the grueling match, winning the deuce point and taking the third set, 7-5.
Joining Divar in the Yellow Jackets’ winning circle would be Andrew Li, who improved to 2-1 in singles play this spring. Li jumped out of the gate strong and never looked back, downing Adam Ambrozy in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Elijah Melendez improved to 4-0 since the new year, grinding out a three-set, come-from-behind victory over Alex Keyser, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. Daniel Yun also captured another victory as he defeated Rian Pandole in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.
Elsewhere in singles, Jack Lin downed Phillip Gresk, 6-3, 6-3, in his first action of the spring, before No. 38 Jackie Tang defeated Chris Yun, 6-4, 6-4. Michael Kay fell in a tough match to Austen Huang, 7-5, 6-4, before Columbia closed out the day with No. 122 Timothy Wang’s 6-3, 6-1 win over freshman Brandon Freestone.
Tech will close out the MLK Invitational on Monday, Jan. 15 when it goes toe-to-toe with archrival Georgia. The action is set to begin at 1 p.m.
