Jackets Battle on Day Two of MLK Invitational

Jan. 15, 2017

THE FLATS — Georgia Tech men’s tennis took seven matches on day two of the MLK Invitational over No. 17 Illinois at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. The Jackets face off against Georgia on Monday at 1 p.m. for the final day of competition.

Singles Update: The Yellow Jackets battled hard in the singles matches against the Fighting Illini. Christopher Eubanks took his match to three sets before beating Aleks Vukic, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Freshman Carlos Divar came back from a first set loss to force a third with No. 85 Aleks Kovacevic before falling 3-6, 6-4, 2-6. Chris Yun took a close match over Noe Khlif on court one, 7-6(2), 1-6, 6-3. Michael Kay topped his opponent in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Elijah Melendez remains undefeated in the tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Vuk Budic.

Doubles Update: The Jackets kicked off the session by taking three of four doubles matches over the Fighting Illini. Divar and Daniel Yun made quick work of their match in the pair’s debut, topping Vukic and Clark, 6-1. Chris Yun and Kay followed suit, defeating Landa and Khlif, 6-4. Eubanks and Carlos Benito grabbed the last doubles win for Tech with a tight 7-5 rout of Jesse and Gomes.

Head coach Kenny Thorne says: “Doubles were a lot better today. I felt like we made some corrections and across the board, in all four matches, we were doing the right things and that’s what you hope for, we’ll get better if we continue to play like that. Singles we got deep in the sets of some of the matches and Illinois is a top-25 team so I think we fought our way through a couple of them. I liked seeing all the way down the lineup, guys took care of their matches so that shows that we’ve got added depth. I think we’re trying the right things and if we can be a little more disciplined then we’re going to be the team we’re looking to be.”
