Tournament Results (will be updated throughout the weekend)

THE FLATS – The first day of the Tech-hosted MLK Invitational saw the home team score some impressive wins against the Rebels of Ole Miss. Yellow Jacket freshman Carlos Benito of Madrid, Spain, defeated William Kallberg–ranked the 54th singles player in the nation–in straight sets (6-3, 6-4), at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta.

Benito’s victory came on the back of his third consecutive doubles win this spring. He and partner Eduardo Segura, a junior also from Madrid, defeated the Ole Miss pairing of Nik Scholtz and Johan Backstrom 6-5 in a thrilling 11-9 tiebreak.

Meanwhile, freshman Cole Fiegel continued his own hot streak with a 6-3, 6-2 singles win over Vinod Gowda. Feigel also partnered with sophomore Anish Sharma to defeat the Rebels’ Gowda and Zach Wilder 6-2 in doubles play.

Tech’s other doubles team, comprised of sophomores Nathan Rakitt and Casey Kay, had a thrilling match of their own against Kallberg and Stefan Lindmark. Though they fell in a 8-6 tiebreak, their 6-5 loss to the 51st-ranked doubles team in the nation was their first of the spring.

The tournament will resume Sunday morning with matches between Georgia and Ole Miss. Tech will face Memphis Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. and Georgia on Monday, also at 1 p.m.
