Tech vs. Upstate Results

ATLANTA -

The Georgia Tech (4-0) men's tennis team swept its second-consecutive doubleheader with a pair of 7-0 wins over visiting USC Upstate (1-2) and Georgia Southern (0-3) at the Bill Moore Tennis Center Sunday.

The Yellow Jackets opened the day with a clean sweep of the doubles matches over USC Upstate. Scott Blackmon and Ryan Smith came out strong with an 8-2 win over Sandy Franz and Renzo Airaldi of Upstate. Guillermo Gomez and George Gvelesiani secured the doubles point with an 8-2 win over Jack Roux and Javier Tori. David North and Eliot Potvin completed the sweep with an 8-2 win over Leandro Osorio and Sabastian Gonzales-Orbegoso.

"I was happy with the way we came out and established right away in doubles," head coach Kenny Thorne said. "We jumped out to a lead right away. Our guys competed consistently well, stayed intense and stayed focused. One of the keys coming away was jumping on top of them early. It's good to see David North back playing; he started a little slow but got it together and got focused. It was a good match for him. Ryan Smith's match was a good fight, two strong tie-breakers. Their guy played well and Ryan showed good things towards the end of the match. He played to win, that's good to define the guy."

Gomez and Potvin opened the second match of the day with an 8-0 win over Mark Paetz and Gregory Bekkers of Georgia Southern. Blackmon and Smith earned another doubles win with an 8-3 victory over Emmanuel Nkoeleue and Borja Malet. The team of North and Miguel Muguruza completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win over Philip Prins and Matthew Sands.

Scott Blackmon opened up singles play with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win over Georgia Southern's Prins. Freshmen Miguel Muguruza (6-0, 6-1) and Doug Kenny (6-1, 6-2) came in next with straight set wins over Mark Paetz and Rasim Magafurov, respectively. Sophomore Austin Roebuck (6-4, 6-4) and senior David North (6-1, 7-6 [8-6]) finished off the second sweep of the day.

"I thought the guys fight was good and their composure was good," Thorne said. "A couple of matches were pretty close but we played to win. That's what I've been asking of these guys. We have a tough match next Sunday against Mississippi State. It's going to be a very competitive match and the guys are looking forward to it."

The Jackets will face Mississippi State Bulldogs next Sunday, Feb. 10 at noon. Tech will then face another SEC opponent when Auburn comes to the Flats on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 2:00 p.m.
