Feb. 19, 2009
ATLANTA - Guillermo Gomez captured a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Nejc Podkrajsek in the clinching match, and Georgia Tech did not lose a set Thursday in handing Georgia State a 7-0 men's tennis defeat Thursday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on the Tech campus.
Playing outdoors for the first time this spring with wind gusts reaching 25 miles per hour, the Yellow Jackets improved to 4-2 in dual matches this season, while the Panthers remained winless at 0-8.
"Under the conditions, we played well and handled the wind well today," said head coach Kenny Thorne, whose team visits Auburn Sunday at 2 p.m. "I give the guys credit for getting ahead and finishing it off. It was a good match for us, and we might face similar conditions on Sunday against Auburn."
Gomez, a sophomore from Alicante, Spain, who is ranked No. 14 in the nation, improved his dual match record to 19-4 with his victory.
All six Tech players won in straight sets, beginning with sophomore Miguel Muguruza's 6-1, 6-1 decision over Henri Mangin at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Doug Kenny was next to finish with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Trenton Spinks at No. 6 before Gomez clinched the match for the Jackets at No. 1.
Gomez and sophomore Ryan Smith, playing together for the first time this year, clinched the doubles point for Tech with an 8-4 victory over Podkrajsek and Shishkov. Kevin King and Doug Kenny also won over Spinks and Moore, 8-2.
