AUSTIN, Texas – Despite taking the doubles points, Georgia Tech men’s tennis was unable to hang on, suffering a 5-2 setback to 24th-ranked Texas on Sunday afternoon at the Weller Tennis Center.

The Yellow Jackets (3-7) launched a strong offensive in doubles as the tandem of Carlos Divar and Michael Kay downed the Longhorns’ (7-2) third-ranked team of Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles 7-5 in the 6-all tiebreak. It’s the second victory in Divar and Kay’s last three matches over a nationally ranked duo.

Phillip Gresk and Andrew Li secured the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Colin Markes and Yuta Ito from Texas to go up 1-0.

Texas fought back, however, in singles play as No. 118 Ito downed No. 41 Divar in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, before Markes defeated Daniel Yun, 6-4, 6-2.

Georgia Tech’s lone singles victory came in a hard-fought No. 4, where senior Elijah Melendez took No. 43 Telles to a 10-point tiebreak in the third set. After Melendez took set one, 6-3, and Telles fought back, 7-5, in the second, Melendez then clawed his way to a 10-6 win – his second straight.

Michael Kay fell in straight sets to Adrian Ortiz, 6-2, 6-3, before No. 62 Harrison Scott defeated Li, 6-4, 6-1. Phillip Gresk, in his first match this season at the No. 2, dropped a 6-3, 6-4 match to Texas’ Christian Sigsgaard.

Georgia Tech returns for a two-match homestand, beginning on March 2 against Miami at 5:30 p.m. The Jackets will then host Georgia State on March 3 at 2 p.m.
