ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team won each of their doubles and singles matches to shut out Georgia State, 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

With the victory, the 30th ranked Yellow Jackets improved to 8-3 overall, while Georgia State fell to 7-4 with the loss.

“It was good for us to finally get outdoors today,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “For each of our guys to go out there and win their matches against Georgia State team that is getting better is definitely a positive. However, we still have some more work to do before we get back into the ACC season.”

Georgia Tech got off to a good start in the match by taking the doubles point with a clean sweep of the Georgia State doubles lineup. The first team to finish for Tech was the number two tandem of Kevin King and Juan Spir, who made quick work of GSU’s Jackson Moore and Juan Pablo Guitierrez with an 8-1 win.

At the number three spot, Tech’s Guillermo Gomez and Ryan Smith were 8-4 winners over Victor Valente and Henri Mangin of Georgia St. The win clinched the doubles point for the Jackets. In the final match to be completed, Dean O’Brien and Eliot Potvin completed the sweep of doubles with a hard fought 9-7 win at number one over Trenton Spinks and Calvin Kemp.

In singles, Tech made the score 2-0 after Kevin King won by retirement over Georgia State’s Calvin Kemp, who suffered an injury in the matches outset. The Jackets made the score 3-0 when Spir knocked off Spinks at number six singles in straight sets (6-3. 6-4).

The Jackets clinched the win at number five singles, as Magin Ortiga made quick work of Pablo Guitierrez in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. In other action, O’Brien was another straight set winner number four singles, beating GSU’s Mangin 6-4, 6-0.

In the final two matches to be contested on the afternoon, Miguel Muguruza came back to beat Moore at number three singles in three sets (1-6, 6-2, 6-1), while Potvin won a hard-fought, three set match against Valente, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 to close out the match.

Georgia Tech returns to action on March 7th when they host UNC Wilmington at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2:30 p.m.
