Tech Tennis Concludes Road Schedule with 6-1 Win Over Boston College
Jackets sweep doubles play, take five in singles
April 5, 2009
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Georgia Tech men's tennis team concluded the road portion of its schedule with a 6-1 triumph over Boston College Sunday in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The Jackets improve to 9-9 on the season, 4-5 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
"We played very well in doubles, which was important after a tough day in Maryland," head coach Kenny Thorne said. "Ryan [Smith], Kevin [King] and Guillermo [Gomez] came out and won handily, which clinched the match very quickly. Otherwise, it was a tough fought match in the remaining singles."
The Jackets took a 1-0 lead after sweeping doubles play to start the match off. Sophomore Doug Kenny and Freshman Kevin King cruised to an 8-0 win on court two over BC's Skinner and Locklear. Playing at No. 3 for the first time this season, sophomore Guillermo Gomez teamed up with junior Austin Roebuck for an 8-2 victory over Davidson and Muppidi. Sophomores Miguel Muguruza and Ryan Smith completed the sweep with an 8-4 triumph over Nolan and Kruetzer on court number one.
In singles, the Tech men would take three-straight matches as King had the clincher in a 6-4, 6-0 win over Alex Skinner at No. 4 for a 4-0 lead. Gomez got things started with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Thomas Nolan at No. 1, before Smith took down Brendon Wong 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 soon after.
The last three groups played the third set as a 10-point tie-breaker due to Tech having clinched the match.
The Eagles would get a point back at No. 2 as Akash Muppidi defeated Muguruza 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2) to make it 4-1. Sophomore Eliot Potvin picked up his 20th win of the year with a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-9) triumph over Erik Kruetzer to make it 5-1. Roebuck continued his hot streak with a 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5) win over Brian Locklear at No. 6 to close out the match and give Tech the 6-1 win. The Athens, Ga. native is now 6-1 in dual match play, having won four matches in a row.
The Jackets will close out the regular season schedule next weekend, as they host No. 25 Duke Friday at 2:30 p.m. and No. 36 North Carolina Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
