No. 18 Jackets Fall at No. 3 Virginia, 6-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Competing at No. 3 Virginia Thursday afternoon, No. 18 Georgia Tech (15-4, 7-2) men’s tennis dropped a 6-1 decision to the Cavaliers (21-1, 8-1). Daniel Yun captured Tech’s lone point of the afternoon, winning in straight sets in singles play.

SINGLES UPDATE: No. 3 singles wrapped up first as Virginia took a 2-0 match lead with a 6-2, 6-3 victory before the Cavaliers grabbed a 3-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-4 victory on court five. Virginia clinched the match from court four as Carl Soderlund edged Carlos Divar 6-2, 6-3. Alexander Ritschard pushed the Cavaliers in front 5-0, winning 6-3, 6-2 over No. 104 Andrew Li on court two before Daniel Yun gave Tech its first point of the afternoon from court six. The Jacket defeated No. 115 J.C. Aragone 6-3, 7-6 (3). With a 7-6 (6), 7-6 (6) win on court one from No. 13 Thai-Son Kwiatkowski over No. 5 Eubanks, Virginia accounted for the final 6-1 score.

DOUBLES UPDATE: Virginia grabbed the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead over the Jackets. The Cavaliers took the first match to finish on court three with Colin Altamirano/J.C. Aragone defeated Divar/Michael Kay 6-2. Tech evened the doubles field winning on court one as Christopher Eubanks/Benito edged No. 47 Luca Corinteli/Henrik Wiersholm 6-3, leaving the doubles point to be decided on court two. UVA clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court two.

HEAD COACH KENNY THORNE SAYS: “Virginia played too well today. They showed why they are the defending national champions. We had an opportunity in doubles and Daniel Yun played a very strong match at number six. They played well at home on senior day. We will get ready for Virginia Tech on Saturday.”

UP NEXT: Georgia Tech returns to the courts on Saturday at Virginia Tech. First serve in Blacksburg is slated for 10:30 a.m.
