Jackets fall to Demon Deacons in ACC Semifinal

ROME, Ga. – Battling in the north Georgia sun, fourth-seeded Georgia Tech men’s tennis (17-7, 8-4 ACC) fell to No. 1-seed Wake Forest (27-1, 12-0), 4-0, in the semifinal of the 2017 ACC Championship on Saturday afternoon. The Jackets wait to find their fate in the NCAA tournament seeding during the NCAA men’s tennis selection show on Tuesday, May 2 at 5 p.m. ET.

Singles Update: The Demon Deacons came into singles play with the 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point. The team battled hard throughout the lineup, trading games. Tech dropped five of the six first sets, with senior Carlos Benito pocketing one for Tech at 7-5. No. 51 Borna Gojo put the Demon Deacons up 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 89 Andrew Li.

The rest of the team continued to fight, Christopher Eubanks took the second set into a tiebreak at 6-6, Benito took his match into a third and Daniel Yun was up 5-3 in the second over Dennis Upsensky. Finishing almost simultaneously, Wake Forest notched its last two points on five and six. Chris Yun dropped his match to No. 75 Christian Seraphim, 7-5, 6-4 as Cole Fiegel fell to Alan Gadjiev, 6-3, 6-4.

Doubles Update: Wake Forest took the doubles point with wins at the one and three positions. No. 1-ranked doubles pairing Skander Mansouri and Seraphim topped Benito and Eubanks, 6-1, to take the advantage in the doubles point. Chrysochos and Upensky clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Daniel Yun and Carlos Divar.

Head coach Kenny Thorne says: “I’m proud of the fight our guys had out there today. It was a hot one and despite the outcome, we challenged them and kept it close the whole way. Now it’s time to shake it off, keep working through finals week and get ready to for the NCAA tournament.”
