Eubanks Advances to 2nd Round of Singles Championship

May 24, 2017

ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia Tech men’s tennis junior Christopher Eubanks took care of business on Wednesday morning with a quick 6-3, 7-5 victory over UCLA’s Martin Redlicki in the opening round of the NCAA Singles Championship. The No. 7-seeded Eubanks will play the winner of the match between Jordan Daigle (LSU) and Or Ram-Harel (Tulsa) on Thursday, May 25.

“Chris was very poised today in a tough first-round matchup,” said Georgia Tech men’s tennis head coach Kenny Thorne. “He played a very good left-handed player from UCLA with a big game. Chris served well with the exception of one game. He responded well after going down a break in the second set by breaking back immediately. It is always good to get that first round under your belt. Every player is tough here, so he is going to prepare for his next opponent.”

Originally scheduled for 9 a.m., the match was moved to 8 a.m. amid weather concerns and delayed 45 minutes because of moisture on the courts. Eubanks served first, shutting out Redlicki to pocket the first game. The pair traded games to a score of 3-3 in the first set. Eubanks again utilized his service to go up 4-3 and then broke Redlicki on the no-ad point for the 5-3 advantage. With the service back in his control, the junior easily finished out the first set with a 6-3 win.

The second set started much the same, trading games to a 3-2 score before Redlicki broke, taking the 4-2 advantage over Eubanks. The ACC Player of the Year responded with a break, bringing the tally to 4-3 with a chance to tie it up with the serve. The Atlanta native shut out Redlicki with his serve to even the set at 4-4. Redlicki took the next game to bring the score to 5-4 but Eubanks didn’t falter, evening the score at 5-5. Eubanks earned his second service break of the set to take a 6-5 lead, then served out the match for the win.
