Eubanks Upsets Donaldson to Advance in Atlanta Open

July 28, 2017

THE FLATS – Continuing to be the story in front of his hometown crowd of Atlanta, Georgia Tech men’s tennis senior Christopher Eubanks downed the 59th ranked Jared Donaldson 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 on Thursday night in the second round of the BB&T Atlanta Open.

Despite the three-plus-hour rain delay to the match, Eubanks came out of the gates on fire to set the tone against the tournament’s eighth-seeded Donaldson. Even through losing a service game, the Atlanta native powered through, breaking Donaldson right back to tie it up before eventually taking the first set, 6-4.

Donaldson would find his groove more in the second set, breaking first and using his red-hot serve to his advantage to take the second, 6-4.

Conceding to a third and final set, the two-time ACC Player of the Year and all-American Eubanks smelled the blood in the water, taking Donaldson to task from the very first game – refusing to allow a point.

Eubanks’ composure and focus catapulted him out to a 3-0 lead, where he used his pin-point accurate serve to keep Donaldson on his heels, taking the final set and the match, 6-2.

With his second ATP singles win in as many competitions this week, Eubanks will advance to the quarterfinals of the BB&T Atlanta Open to face off against Ryan Harrison on Friday, July 28, being the second match on the court after 2 p.m. – estimated start time around 3:30-4 p.m.

Harrison played in the match right before Eubanks on the court at Atlantic Station, defeating John Millman, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5. Harrison, 25, entered the Open seated at No. 42 in the ATP singles rankings with an 85-120 record overall. The 6-foot-1 right-hander out of Shreveport, La. was 11-14 in 2017 entering the tournament, coming off of a 1-1 performance at Wimbledon.
