Spir Advances to Quarterfinals in Southern Intercollegiate Tennis
Three Tech doubles teams resume competition Sunday
Athens, Ga. - Fourth-seeded Juan Spir won a pair of singles matches in Division I Saturday and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Southern Intercollegiate Tennis Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The Georgia Tech senior from Medellin, Colombia ousted Georgia's Austin Smith, 6-4, 7-6 (7) in the round of 32 Saturday, when eliminated Kris Yee of Vanderbilt, 6-3, 6-2.
In other Division I matches Saturday, Tech sophomore Eduardo Segura defeated Armstrong Atlantic's Pablo Gor in three sets in the round of 32 before falling to Jonas Lutjen of Mississippi, 6-0, 6-1. Juan Melian, the third Tech player in Division I, fell in three sets to 5th-seed Hernus Pieters of Georgia.
Freshman Nathan Rakitt and sophomore Vikram Hundal both won their round of 32 matches in Division II singles, but fell in the round of 16. Rakitt defeated Kyle Hoffman from Georgia southern in straight sets, then fell in three sets to Hunter Koontz of Virginia Tech. Hundal took a straight-set win over Matt Brown of Furman before losing in three sets to Jaan Kononov of Armstrong Atlantic.
Three Tech doubles teams are in the round of 16 in their respective divisions when doubles play resumes Sunday. Freshman Garrett Gordon and Hundal filled out the round of 16 in Division II with an 8-3 win over Virginia Tech's Aaron Gomez and Marko Lovrinovic. Melian and Rakitt won their first-round match Friday in Division II, while Spir and Segura won their first match Friday in Division I.
