Gomez, Muguruza, Miljevic Advance in Rain-Soaked SIC Tennis

Sept. 20, 2009

Athens, Ga. –

All-American Guillermo Gomez advanced to the quarterfinals in Division I, while Dusan Miljevic and Miguel Muguruza reached the round of 16 Sunday as rain caused havoc with the draw at the Southern Intercollegiate Championship tennis tournament.

Remaining doubles matches in Divisions I and II were canceled, and no consolation matches will be played due to continuing rain at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Gomez, a junior from Alicante, Spain, took a straight-set victory (6-1, 6-2) from Duke’s Torstein Wietoska in the round of 32, then the third-seed advanced to Monday’s quarterfinal with a walk-over win against Grega Teraz of East Tennessee State.

Meanwhile, No. 8 seed Muljevic (sophomore, Novi Sad, Serbia) downed Georgia’s Alex Hill, 6-4, 6-1, in the round of 32 in Division II, and No. 9 seed Muguruza (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) eliminated Renzo Airadli of USC-Upstate, who retired in the second set after falling behind 6-3, 2-0.

Gomez will face Vanderbilt’s Ryan Lipman in a Monday quarterfinal match in Division I at 9 a.m. In Division II, Muguruza is scheduled to face Vanderbilt’s Charlie Jones, the No. 5 seed, at 9 a.m., and Miljevic is scheduled to face Georgia State’s Martin Shishkov at 1:30 p.m.

In other Division I matches, Junior Eliot Potvin (Hampden, Maine) defeated Edgar Rodriguez of USC Upstate, 6-3, 6-4, Sunday in the round of 16 before falling to Duke’s Henrique Cunha, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8). Junior Dean O’Brien (Benmore, South Africa) was eliminated in the round of 32 by Georgia’s Drake Bernstein, 6-4, 6-3.

Austin Roebuck, a senior from Athens, beat Will Oliver of Georgia, 6-3, 6-2, Sunday in the Division II round of 64, then advanced to the round of 16 with a walk-over win against Daniel Isaza of East Tennessee State.
