ATHENS, Ga. – After two full days of tennis at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, Georgia Tech men’s tennis senior Carlos Benito advances to the quarterfinals and two doubles pairing advance to the round of 16. The SIC continues through Monday when the championship matches will be held.

Singles Update: Li kicked off day one for the Jackets with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 rout of Old Dominion’s Adam Moundir in the out match. After dropping the first set, Benito rallied to a 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 victory over Philippe Courteau of Lipscomb University. Freshman Chris Yun made a splash in his collegiate debut. He took down Lucas de Torres Curth of Kennesaw State in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Senior Michael Kay made a strong showing with a win in the opening round over Kentucky’s Trey Yates in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Daniel Yun fell to Daniel Valent of Vanderbilt in the opening round by a score of 6-2, 6-3. David Biosca (East Tennessee State) defeated senior Cole Fiegel in the round of 64, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. Sophomore Phillip Gresk lost to Vanderbilt’s Billy Rowe, 6-3, 6-4. Lin fell in the round of 64 to Oklahoma’s Florin Bragusi, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.

In the second round, Kay fell to Florida’s Elliot Orkin in three sets 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Chris Yun was topped by East Tennessee State’s Miguel Este, 6-3, 6-2. Benito took his second match of the day in the round of 32 against Texas Tech’s Niko Moceanu in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.

On day two of play, Benito continued to look strong with a 6-4, 6-1 rout of Chris Barrus (University of Central Florida). He will play in the quarterfinals against Johannes Inglidsen (Florida) on Sunday.

In the consolation bracket, Gresk topped Sebastian Mueller (Eastern Kentucky) by a score of 6-3, 6-4 for his first collegiate victory. Chis Yun avenged his teammate by topping Vanderbilt’s Rowe in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

Doubles Update: The junior pairing of Kay and Daniel Yun topped Reinberg and Ponwith of Georgia, 6-4. Chris Yun and Cole Fiegel paired up to beat Camill and Kurtze from Armstrong State, 6-1 and advance to the next round on Sunday. Li and Gresk fell to Vanderbilt’s Klinger and Rowe by a score of 6-1.

Head coach Kenny Thorne says: “What I liked most about the matches is how our guys didn’t take any solace in a close loss. They wanted and expected to win. Carlos started off playing really poorly and worked his way back into his first match. He got the win and now is playing better and better each match. Doubles results are hard to evaluate because we play one set and whether you win or lose a couple of deuce points, it can turn a 6-3 loss into a 6-3 win. We have three new teams and haven’t practiced doubles once this season so I am careful to not be too critical. We will get to where we need to be in doubles. I am just looking for guys that want to take over the doubles court and be the intimidating force.”
