THE FLATS – Georgia Tech’s Casey Kay and Daniel Yun won their opening-round singles matches Friday, while Georgia Tech added a pair of opening-round doubles victories on the first day of the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.

SINGLES UPDATE — Five Tech players are entered into the singles draw this weekend — senior Casey Kay, sophomore Michael Kay and freshman Andrew Li, as well as Melendez and Yun, but only Casey Kay and Yun came away with singles victory Friday. Kay defeated The Citadel’s Nick Bradley in the C Division. He moves on to face Georgia State’s Andrei Andrukhou in a quarterfinal match Saturday. Yun defeated Xander Veys of UNC Wilmington, 6-4, 6-4, and will play South Carolina’s Harrison O’Keefe in the quarterfinals Saturday.

The rest of the Yellow Jackets move into the consolation bracket. Michael Kay dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision to Jose Slazar of Arkansas in the A Division, while Arkansas’ Sanitago Munoz stopped Tech freshman Andrew Li in three sets (7-6, 3-6, 7-6), winning tiebreakers in the first and third sets. The Gamecocks’ Yancy Dennis took a three-set decision (6-2, 3-6, 6-1) from Elijah Melendez.

DOUBLES UPDATE — Melendez and Yun continued the momentum built by winning their doubles division in the Southern Intercollegiate by outlasting Zvonimir Babic and Fabian Fallert of Ole Miss, 8-7 (5). They move on to face the Arkansas tandem of Munoz and Michael Redlicki Saturday. The Kay brothers downed the South Carolina duo of O’Keefe and Thomas Mayronne, 8-5, and get a semifinal date Saturday against Auburn’s Eddie Nguyen and Joseph Van Dooren.

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION — All 32 opening-round singles matches and 16 opening-round doubles matches were completed Friday despite rain which forced all competition to be conducted indoors. Two rounds of singles in the main draw of all four divisions, plus one consolation round, will be played Saturday, followed by one round of doubles in each division.

The tournament has a 64-player singles draw and a 32-team doubles draw with championship matches on Sunday. Back draw finals also will be played Sunday. Doubles matches are 8-game pro sets, singles matches 2 out of 3 sets. No-AD scoring is utilized for all matches.

A total of 64 players represent 11 teams — Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Middle Tennessee State, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, The Citadel, UNC Wilmington.

PARKING ALERT — Parking for Saturday and Sunday is available in the McCamish Pavilion lot, 8th Street or Fowler Street.
