2013 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Draws
Recap and Qualifying Results, Friday, October 11

THE FLATS – Seven of the top eight seeds in singles and 13 of the 16 seeds won their first-round matches Saturday at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional, while Florida State and South Florida each had five players advance to the second round of the main draw in singles.

Meanwhile, Georgia Tech’s Nathan Rakitt and Cole Fiegel knocked off the top-seeded doubles team of Hernus Pieters and Ben Wagland from Georgia, who are ranked No. 2 in the nation, by a score of 8-4. Florida State grabbed three of the eight quarterfinal spots in doubles, including an upset of the third-seeded Georgia team of Garrett Brasseaux and Nathan Pasha by Benjamin Lock and Marco Nunez, 8-6.

Tech’s Casey Kay pulled the biggest upset of the day in the 64-player singles draw, stunning Pieters, the fifth seed, 6-3, 7-6 (2). North Florida players recorded the other two upsets – Caio Gomez toppled Tech’s Rakitt in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, while Yannick Zuern defeated Gordon Watson of Florida, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

The top seed, Wagland of Georgia, lost his first set to Florida State’s Grayson Goldin, but came back to finish off the Seminole qualifier, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. No. 4 seed Lock of FSU also needed three sets to win his match against Georgia State’s Thomas Cook. The rest of the top eight seeds – No. 2 Pasha of Georgia, No. 3 Florent Diep of Florida, No. 6 Dominic Cotrone of FSU, No. 7 Wilfredo Gonzalez of Miami and No. 8 Michael Alford of Florida – won easily.

The Seminoles, with a tournament high of nine players in the main draw, also sent top-16 seeds Cristian Gonzalez and Michael Rinaldi and unseeded Jose Gracia into the second round. Rinaldi needed three sets and three hours and four minutes to dispatch Kennesaw State’s Simon Pritchard.

South Florida enjoyed a banner day, getting six of its players into the second round. Only Ignacio Gonzalez failed to advance, losing to Miami’s Henrique Tsukamoto in three sets. Two Bulls players – Paul Polarczyk and Federico Sebogal – won their first-round matches after making it through qualifying rounds Friday.

Four players each from Florida, Florida State and North Florida advanced to the round of 32, which will take place Sunday morning. Georgia had three players advance, including top-16 seed Brasseaux.

Kay was the only one of four players from Tech, the host school, to advance Saturday. Freshmen Carlos Benito and Cole Fiegel also lost in straight sets.

Five of the top eight seeds in doubles made it to the quarterfinals, including No. 2 Blake Davis and Cotrone of FSU, No. 4 Ignacio Gonzalez and Oliver Pramming of USF, No. 6 Gordon Watson and Elliott Orkin of Florida and No. 8 Diep and Alford of Florida. North Florida’s Norbert Nemscek and Jack Findel-Hawkins (No. 5) was the other seeded team to fall.

Sunday’s competition schedule begins at 8 a.m. with consolation matches in singles and doubles. Second- and third-round singles matches in the main draw, as well as quarterfinals in doubles, will begin at approximately 10 a.m. The tournament continues through Tuesday morning, when the singles and doubles championship matches will be played.

The USTA/ITA Southeast Regional is one of 16 events being held around the country this weekend. Each singles and doubles champion advances to compete in the USTA/ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships, Nov. 7-11 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
