THE FLATS –  Georgia Tech’s Nathan Rakitt and Cole Fiegel scored their second upset in doubles in the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Sunday, advancing to the semifinals with an 8-5 victory over 8th-seeded Florent Diep and Michael Alford of Florida at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex on the Georgia Tech campus.

They turn around quickly and face 4th-seeded Ignacio Gonzalez and Oliver Pramming of South Florida at 9 a.m. Monday in the first semifinal match. Gonzalez and Pramming defeated Florida State’s Cristian Gonzalez-Mendez and Jose Gracia by the same score. The Gators’ Gordon Watson and Elliott Orkin, the 6th seed, will face Florida State’s unseeded duo of Benjamin Lock and Marco Nunez in the other semifinals.

In singles, two more seeded players were upset Sunday, and only four seeded players remain for Monday’s quarterfinals.

Georgia’s Nathan Pasha, at No. 2 the highest seed remaining in the singles bracket, dismissed Norbert Nemscek of North Florida, while Benjamin Lock of Florida State, the fourth seed, defeated Henrique Tsukamoto of Miami in straight sets, and Florida’s Alford (No. 8) beat Gonzalez-Mendez. UGA’s Garrett Brasseaux, a top-16 seed, upset the No. 3 seed, Diep of Florida, to get through to the quarterfinals. All four matches went straight sets.

Unseeded players advancing to the quarters were Florida’s Orkin and Maxx Lipman, South Florida’s Sasha Gozun and Florida Gulf Coast’s Jordi Vives, who knocked off No. 7 seed Wilfredo Gonzalez of Miami in three sets. Lipman needed three sets to ooutlast Miami’s William Albanese, and Gozun upset top-16 seed Diego Soto of the Hurricanes.

Georgia Tech’s Casey Kay, who knocked off fifth-seeded Hernus Pieters Saturday, lost to Lipman, 6-4, 6-4, in the round of 32 Sunday. Two Georgia Tech players advanced to the quarterfinals of the back draw of singles – Rakitt beat Georgia Southern’s Oliver Webb and Georgia State’s Jannis Koeke in straight sets, while Carlos Benito downed Kennesaw State’s Jake Bouchillon and Georgia State’s Eric Baum in straight sets.

Monday’s competition includes quarterfinals and semifinals in singles, and semifinals in doubles, as well as some consolation matches in both singles and doubles. Play begins at 9 a.m. The tournament continues through Tuesday morning, when the singles and doubles championship matches will be played.

The USTA/ITA Southeast Regional is one of 16 events being held around the country this weekend. Each singles and doubles champion advances to compete in the USTA/ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships, Nov. 7-11 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
