Eubanks Wins USTA/ITA Sportsmanship Award; Falls in Semis
Georgia Tech men’s tennis Christopher Eubanks falls to No. 11 in National Indoor semifinals
FLUSHING, N.Y. – Georgia Tech men’s tennis junior Christopher Eubanks was awarded the Men’s USTA/ITA Sportsmanship Award at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Saturday following his semifinal match. He fell to Arkansas’ No. 11 Michael Redlicki in the semifinals, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (4).
The award is given to one women’s and one men’s player from the tournament that displayed good sportsmanship on the court. It is voted on by coaches and officials.
Eubanks came out to a strong start, breaking Redlicki’s serve to go up 3-2 in the first set. The All-American had the opportunity to serve for the set point at 5-4 but the Arkansas senior returned to tie the set at 5-5. Redlicki took the next point on his serve to lead by one but a shutout on Eubanks’ service forced a tiebreak. Unfortunately the tiebreaker didn’t go in Eubanks’ favor and Redlicki stole the first set, 7-6 (1).
The pair traded points in the first set, neither breaking on a serve to bring the score to 6-6 and yet another tiebreaker. Redlicki held on once more in the tiebreaker and Eubanks fell 7-6 (4).
Volunteer coach Kevin King says: “Chris came out strong today and was able to get an early break. He gave himself an opportunity to close out the set but his opponent was able to come up with big shots to get it into a tiebreaker. In both sets Redlicki served well at the end. Chris competed hard but it just didn’t go his way in the tiebreakers.”
