Li Competes in Davis Cup

Feb. 6, 2017

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis had a notable absence in the lineups against Georgia State and Auburn. Sophomore Andrew Li was across the globe in Vietnam, competing for his native Hong Kong in the first round of the Davis Cup.

“Andrew had the privilege of representing Hong Kong in their Davis Cup tie against Vietnam this weekend,” said Georgia Tech men’s tennis head coach Kenny Thorne. “Anytime you are able to represent your country at that level, it is a huge honor. All the greatest tennis players in the world talk about how special it is to represent their country at the Davis Cup.

“It is amazing what our student athletes are able to accomplish throughout the season. Andrew has a 3.5 GPA, is playing near the top of our lineup and flew over to Vietnam and represented his country in the Davis Cup for the weekend. We have special student athletes here at Georgia Tech, and they deserve to be celebrated.”

Li, who was ranked at No. 61 in the latest ITA singles rankings, has been a fixture in the No. 24-ranked Georgia Tech lineup since his freshman campaign. He played the first four dual matches of the 2017 season at the number two position. Li and doubles partner Cole Fiegel are undefeated playing at the three position with a 4-0 record.

Hong Kong faced Vietnam in the opening tie, playing in Asia/Oceania Group II. Hong Kong came out on top, advancing to the semifinals by a score of 3-2. The second round is slated for April 7-9, when Hong Kong will take on Pakistan.
