THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis heads to Orlando, Fla., and the USTA National Campus to battle archrival Georgia as part of 2018 USTA College MatchDay on Friday, Feb. 9.
The Yellow Jackets (3-3) are coming off a pair of losses in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend (Jan. 27-28) to then-No. 16 Illinois and Northwestern. Georgia Tech is still searching for its first victory away from The Flats and hope to do it against the fourth-ranked Bulldogs (2-0).
Still fighting hard at the No. 1, Carlos Divar leads the singles group in dual matches with a record of 4-1 and 13-4 overall. He jumps up to No. 38 nationally in the first Oracle/ITA singles rankings of the spring. Seniors Elijah Melendez and Michael Kay have battled at each position they’ve been at, floating from the 2 to the 6. Melendez has recorded a mark of 4-1 so far while Kay starts the weekend at 4-2.
Daniel Yun also holds an above .500 record in singles this season, having won his first two matches at the 3 and the 6, but lost his last one to be at 2-1.
In doubles, Kay and Divar haved amassed an early 4-1 record (8-3 overall) while Brandon Freestone and Melendez have recorded a 3-1 mark overall and a 1-0 record in dual. The duos of Andrew Li and both Chris Yun and D. Yun have also been successful, equaling a combined 2-0 record so far.
Georgia has only played two dual matches so far this season, both coming at home in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Bulldogs downed Iowa, 4-0, before defeating Memphis, 4-1, to win the event. UGA touts five nationally ranked players on its roster and three in the top 20 this season. Walker Duncan leads the pack at No. 14 with Wayne Montgomery right behind him at No. 17.
The rivalry matchup will be aired live nationally on Tennis Channel and Tennis Channel Everywhere with first serve being scheduled for 7 p.m. Veteran tennis broadcaster Leif Shiras and former world No. 4 James Blake will be on the call, alongside former world No. 5 Jimmy Arias, who will serve as the “sideline” reporter.
