ATLANTA – Eduardo Segura Mandarino, ranked among the top 60 players in Spain, has signed a letter-of-intent to play tennis at Georgia Tech, head coach Kenny Thorne announced Wednesday.
Segura, 19, has accumulated 121 wins against players in his national classification, and has captured championships in several national tournaments, including the Silver Cup Junior Tournament and Junior Team Championship in his native Madrid. He has competed in 17 ITF futures events over the last two years (2010, 2011), and has reached the semi-finals of the Madrid Under 18 Championship in singles two consecutive years, and also to the finals in doubles.
“Eduardo will be a very good addition to our recruiting for this year,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “He understands the opportunity Georgia Tech offers both academically and athletically. He is one of the better junior tennis players in Spain and the competition over there is extremely tough. I expect him to come over here and make an immediate and significant impact for our team.”
Segura is one of three newcomers for the Yellow Jackets this fall, joining Georgia Southern transfer Juan Melian Puigventos and Chattahoochee High School star Vikram Hundal. He joins a Tech team that is coming off a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Championship and a final ranking of No. 13, and returns two of the nation’s top singles players and the No. 9 doubles team in Kevin King and Juan Spir.
