Four Jackets Set for ITA All-American Championships

THE FLATS – Four Georgia Tech men’s tennis players – Christopher Eubanks, Nathan Rakitt, Cole Fiegel and Carlos Benito – are entered in the various draws for the Saint Francis Health Systems ITA All-American Championships which get underway with the pre-qualification draw on Saturday in Tulsa, Okla.

Eubanks, a 6-foot-7 sophomore from Atlanta who is listed No. 24 in the pre-season ITA ((Intercollegiate Tennis Association) rankings, is in the main singles draw of the event, which begins Oct. 8 in Tulsa, Okla. Rakitt, a senior from Marietta,Ga., and Benito, a junior from Madrid, Spain, will play in the qualifying singles draw that begins Oct. 5. Fiegel, a junior from Alachua, Fla., is entered in pre-qualifying for singles, which begins Saturday.

Benito/Fiegel and Eubanks/Rakitt are in the qualifying draw for doubles.

“The All-American is a good indicator of where we are right now with respect to the rest of the nation,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “Every match is tough so you have be comfortable in the fight. If we want to build on last year then we must be consistent with what we bring to the court each tournament.”

Eubanks went 4-1 at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships two weeks ago, his only action of the fall to date. He finished the spring of his freshman year No. 53 and reached the round of 32 at the NCAA Singles Championship. He went 25-21 last year, playing mostly in the top position in the Yellow Jackets’ lineup during the spring season. Rakitt, a senior from Marietta, Ga., is ranked No. 101 (the ITA ranks the top 125 in the nation). He has 52 singles wins over his first three years at Tech. Benito, playing mostly in the middle of Tech’s order, and Fiegel, playing toward the bottom, won 50 singles matches between them last year

Eubanks and fellow sophomore Michael Kay also appear in the ITA doubles rankings at No. 53, while juniors Carlos Benito and Cole Fiegel are ranked No. 46. Eubanks and Kay went 15-11 as a duo last year, playing No. 2 during the spring.
