Eubanks Falls in Semifinals at NIIC

Nov. 14, 2015

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech sophomore Christopher Eubanks saw his impressive run against ranked opponents come to an end Saturday with a three-set loss to California’s Andre Goransson at the semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y.

Eubanks, ranked No. 24 in the nation, lost the match 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 when the Bears’ junior, ranked 22nd, rallied from 0-30 in the 11th game of the third set to break the Tech sophomore for the second time in the set.

The opening set stayed on serve until Goransson captured a service break at 5-5, then served to win the set. Eubanks broke the Cal junior at 1-0 and again at 4-1 to win second set, 6-1, and even the match. He started third set with a service break at deuce, but Goransson broke back in game two. From there, the players held serve until the final game of the match.

“Chris fought like a champion all tournament,” said Tech assistant coach Derek Schwandt. “I’m excited to see him continue to improve and believe more and more in his game. We’re looking forward to the team season in January.”

Eubanks reached the finals by defeating Duke sophomore Nicolas Alvarez, ranked seventh in the nation, Ohio State junior Herkko Pollanen, ranked 93rd in the nation, and Stanford sophomore Tom Fawcett, ranked No. 20.

The 6-foot-7 sophomore has compiled an 11-4 record in singles this fall and a 4-3 mark against ranked opponents. Earlier in the fall, he reached the semifinals of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens and the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional in Gainesville, Fla.
