Kirillov Improves School Record At UCF Invite

ORLANDO, Fla. – Highlighted by nine top-3 finishes and yet another school record, the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams ended their competition at the UCF Invitational Saturday.

Nikita Kirillov continued to improve his school record pole vault height stretching it to 5.30 meters (17-4.5) for a second place finish. Aaron Unterberger reached 5.20m (17-0.75), cracking the 17 foot mark for the first time in his collegiate career with his third place finish.

Also taking second place was Jonathan Gardner with a leap of 15.00m (49-2.5) in the triple jump. On the women’s side of things, Jhanelle McLeod took home fourth place with a distance of 12.76m (14-10.5) while Julienne McKee took fifth with a distance of 12.68m (41-7.25).

McKee took fourth in the long jump with a distance of 6.02m (19-9) while McLeod finished ninth in 5.81m (19-0.75). Mykhail Chambers had a fifth place finish in the high jump with a height of 2.03m (6-8).

On the running side of things, Eric Powers took home the lone first place finish of the day for the Jackets in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:10.55. He was followed across the finish line by Patrick Barron who took second in 9:22.07 while Alec Clifford finished fourth in 9:42.02.

Stephanie Kalu and Perron Jones finished with seventh place finishes in the 100m dash, Kalu with a time of 11.69 and Jones with a 10.75 second finish. Antonio McKay also finished seventh, but in the 200m dash with a time of 21.05. He was followed by Jones with an 11th place finish of 21.60 and Michael Simms in 15th with a time of 22.03.

Tech also saw success in the 1,500m run as Joseph Stowe and Jeremy Greenwald went 2-3 on the men’s side with times of 3:51.20 and 3:51.55. D.J. McMillan took fifth in the same race with a time of 3:55.02. On the women’s side, Morgan Jackson and Betsy Kim went 3-4 with times of 4:37.84 and 4:38.57 respectively.

Glenn Powell had a top-3 finish in the 110m hurdles finishing in third place with a time of 14.63 while Paul DeVito took eighth in 15.10. On the women’s side, Melanie Akwule had a seventh place finish of 13.87 in the 100m hurdles while Ama Larbi and Jasmine Isley went fifth/eighth in the 400m hurdles with times of 1:00.87 and 1:01.48.

The Jackets will be back in action next weekend at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Friday and Saturday March 30 and 31.
