Jackets Shine on Day Two of Walt Disney World Invitational

ORLANDO, Fla. - Sophomore Nisha Kurian and freshman E.C. Gibbs posted first-place finishes on day two of the Walt Disney World Invitational to lead the Georgia Tech men's and women's track and field teams on Friday night.

Kurian clocked a time of 4:36.04 in the women's 1500 meters, while Gibbs ran a time of 3:55.04 in the men's 1500 meters.

Senior Andriane Lapsley clocked a NCAA Regional qualifying time of 11.44 in the women's 100-meter dash to finish in second place for the Yellow Jackets. Freshman Jacqua Williams posted a fourth-place finish for Tech with a time of 11.71.

Senior Brandy Depland and freshman Nigel Orr tallied NCAA Region marks for Tech in the long jump. Depland finished second in the women's long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 11 inches, while Orr finished sixth in the men's long jump with a mark of 24 feet, 3 inches. Williams tallied a fifth-place finish behind Depland with a mark of 19 feet, 2 inches.

Four Yellow Jackets moved on to the finals of the women's 100-meter high hurdles on Friday night. Sophomore Shantia Moss and junior Fatmata Fofanah clocked NCAA Region qualifying times of 13.64 and 13.80, respectively. Sophomore Tenisha Griggs posted a time of 14.03, while senior Alexandra Van Heuven clocked a personal-best time of 14.73.

Junior David Herren finished second for Tech in the men's 1500 with a time of 3:55.07, while freshman Ashley Keck crossed the women's 1500m finish line in fourth with a time of 4:51.08.

 

 

Freshman Kimery Hern tallied a second-place finish in the women's discus with a toss of 154 feet, 11 inches. She was followed be senior Jewel Welch (150-04-3rd) and freshman Alana Clooten (142-00-5th).

Senior Misty Dirksen posted a time of 2:15.50 in the women's 800 meters to finish in third place for the Jackets. Junior Mary Chind finished fourth in the women's 5,000 meters with a time of 18:04.93.

Redshirt freshman Andy Powlen finished the men's discus with a throw of 158 feet, 7 inches, to finish in fifth place for the Rambling Wreck. Senior Eric Massey tallied a sixth-place finish with a mark of 177 feet.

The Yellow Jackets will conclude competition on Saturday at the Walt Disney World Invitational.
