THE FLATS – Georgia Tech’s Nikita Kirillov pole vaulted to eighth place for Team USA at the IAAF World Junior Championships Thursday in Barcelona, Spain.

Kirillov cleared the bar at 5.30m (17-4.25) in his second IAAF World Championship. The Tech sophomore also competed in the 2009 World Youth Championships, placing sixth in the same event (4.50m, 14-9).

The top three finishers in the event all cleared the 5.55m (18-2.50) height, but Thiago da Silva of Brazil came out on top as a result of a cleaner contest. He fouled just five times compared to the silver medalist Ivan Horvat’s (Croatia) seven failed attempts. The bronze medal was awarded to Canada’s Shawnacy Barber.
