Tech Storms Out of Gates in Day 1 of Charlie Thomas Invite

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Georgia Tech indoor track and field started off the Charlie Thomas Invitational on the right foot on Friday, finishing strong in each of their events on the shorter heptathlon and pentathlon day.

Despite only competing in three events on the day, the Yellow Jackets are currently tied for second in the men’s competition (10 points), while the women’s team is tied for fourth (14 points).

Competition continues on Saturday with field events and the distance prelims getting underway at 1:30 p.m. and distance finals beginning at 3 p.m.

Saturday’s events will air live on the SEC Network + and is available to watch on WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app.

Women’s Highlights

The Yellow Jackets took first place in the DMR, ran by Amy Ruiz, Denise Woode, Haley Anderson, Nicole Fegans. Finishing in a season-best time of 11:35.76, the mark currently ranks second this season in the ACC and 13th in the nation.

Senior Marinice Bauman represented Georgia Tech in the pentathlon and finished fifth overall with a point-total of 3,332. Competing in the 60m hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800 meters, Bauman was able to finish first in both the 60m hurdles (8.80) and the 800 meters (2:24.46).

Along with a personal-record mark in the 800 meters, Bauman’s total pentathlon score ranks fourth in the ACC this season.

Men’s Highlights

The Georgia Tech men’s team also took first place in the DMR, ran by Avery Bartlett, Lionel Jones, Andres Littig andNahom Solomon. The Jackets’ season-best time of 9:46.76 was a full 17 seconds faster than the second-place finisher and currently ranks second in the ACC this year – just 1.06 off the top mark – and ninth in the country.
