BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Georgia Tech track & field team finished the first day of competition at the VT Elite Meet on Friday night, receiving several strong performances in the process.

Freshman Bria Matthews was dominant once again as she was able win the long jump competition with a leap of 6.20m. Last week, Matthews broke the school record in the same event at Vanderbilt. She also claimed a victory and a Birmingham CrossPlex record in the triple jump the week before at the Conference Clash.

Spencer Allen continued his success in the 60m hurdles, finishing second in the finals of the event with a time of 7.98. Kenya Collins was successful in the same event on the women’ side, finishing sixth with a time of 8.40.

Haley Anderson led the Jackets in the 800m, finishing seventh with a personal-best indoor time of 2:13.64. Andres Littig finished fourth on the men’s side, recording a time of 1:50.59.

Nathan Daniel highlighted the field events for the team, finishing in a tie for second in the pole vault with a vault of 5.00m.

“Overall, I thought we looked a little flat tonight with this being our fourth meet in a row on the road,” head men’s coach Grover Hinsdale said. “However, I was very pleased with the performances of Spencer Allen in the 60m hurdles and Nathan Daniel in the pole vault. I hope tomorrow we can show a little more toughness in fighting through fatigue.”

“The women were led again by Bria Matthews in the long jump and Kenya Collins in the hurdles,” head women’s coach Alan Drosky said. “We got some good personal bests in the 800m, most notably Haley Anderson with a top-eight finish, as well as some good efforts in the 400m. This is our fourth meet in four weeks, and I thought we showed a little fatigue. Hopefully with some rest overnight we can come back tomorrow in finish the weekend strong.”
