Matthews, McDavid Finish 2nd in Long Jump Events
Tech will host Georgia Tech Invite in two weeks
AUBURN, Ala. - The Georgia Tech track & field squad concluded its fourth meet of the outdoor season on Saturday night, and several Jackets had stellar performances at the Tiger Track Classic.
Freshman Bria Matthews, who was an ACC gold medalist and All-American in both the long jump and triple jump during the indoor season, finished second in the long jump with a mark of 6.24m (20-05.75).
"It was a good weekend for the women," head women's coach Alan Drosky said. "Bria got a nice jump in to place second in the long jump. Domonique (Hall) and Angelica (Henderson) both got under 56 seconds in the 400m for the first time, and Sam Kiblinger improved in the 800m. Also the 400m relay ran a seasonal-best time. All in all, it was a productive weekend, but we still have work to do in the second half of the season."
Hall (55.93) and Henderson (55.99) finished 16th and 18th in the 400m, respectively, and Kiblinger finished ninth in the 800m with a time of 2:09.47. Tech's 4x100m relay team consisting of Jamilah Middlebrooks, Carissa Tipler, Kenya Collins and Angelica Henderson finished seventh in the women's event with a time of 46.43.
On the men's side, Zach Gunnz recorded a pair of top-10 finishes in the 100m and 200m races. He finished fourth with a time of 21.10 in the 200m and finished eighth with a time 10.64 in the 100m.
"I believe we had a very solid meet here at Auburn," head men's coach Grover Hinsdale said. "I was pleased with the way the guys manned up and bucked up in some very windy conditions. In the 5000m last evening, Nahom Solomon, Matt Munns, Tanner Shaw, Austin Veith, Alex Dunlap, Ryan Miller and Sam Millson all ran PRs. Today, we had PRs from Myles McDavid in the LJ, A.Z. Reese and Lionel Jones in the 400m and Julian Darden in the 400m IH. One more that stood out to me today was Zach Gunnz in the 100m and 200m. Both were very solid performances. All in all, it was a very good meet for us. We need to get back to work and get ready to toe the line at our very own Griffin Track in two weeks."
McDavid finished second in the long jump with a mark of 7.50m (24-07.25), while Reese (47.23) and Jones (48.98) finished fifth and 22nd in the 400m, respectively. Darden finished seventh in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.05.
The Jackets' next meet will be the Georgia Tech Invite, which will take place April 22-23 at the George C. Griffin Track & Field Facility.
