Three Men's Track Athletes Named To Capital One Academic All-District Team

May 30, 2013

THE FLATS – Sophomore Brandon Lasater and seniors Eric Powers and Aaron Unterberger of the Georgia Tech men’s track and field team were named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday.

Lasater is enjoying a breakout sophomore season and earned outdoor All-ACC First Team honors with a first-place finish in the 800 meters (1:48.79) at the ACC Championships. The Perry, Ga. native was named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Association’s (USTFCCCA) National Athlete of the Week on April 8 after he out-kicked No. 3 Florida’s Sean Obinwa in the final leg to win the men’s 4×800-meter relay at the Florida Relays. Last week, Lasater qualified in the 800 meters for the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships set for June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore. He maintains a 3.87 cumulative GPA in electrical engineering.

Powers maintains a cumulative 4.0 GPA in chemical and biomolecular engineering. The Mt. Pleasant, S.C., native earned the 2013 Tau Beta Pi Cup Award, the highest honor given to a graduating senior in the Georgia Tech College of Engineering. On the track, he won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Crimson Indoor Opener (1/12) and placed third in the same event at the Georgia Tech and Yellow Jacket Invites.

Unterberger earned indoor All-ACC Third Team honors and outdoor All-ACC First Team honors. The Snellville, Ga., native garnered USTFCCCA second-team All-America honors, after taking 12th in the pole vault at the NCAA Championships. He won the pole vault in every outdoor meet in which he competed this season, except one – the NCAA East Preliminaries. Unterberger owns a 3.36 cumulative GPA in industrial engineering.

All three athletes are now eligible for Academic All-America consideration. Nominations and voting for the All-America programs are conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.

One Academic All-District team is chosen in each district, with those on the All-District first teams placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
