June 8, 2010
ATLANTA - Three members of the Georgia Tech Track & Field teams - senior's Steve Marcelle and Alphonso Jordan, along with sophomore Bianca Stewart - are set to compete in various events at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Action gets underway on Wednesday morning at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, Ore.
For Jordan and Marcelle, the participation at the NCAA Outdoor Championships marks the final event the duo will compete in during their time on The Flats.
"We are all looking forward to this Championship," men's head coach Grover Hinsdale said. "We bring two exceptional young men to this historic facility; Alphonso Jordan and Steve Marcelle. They have had great success throughout there careers at NCAA Championships and I believe they are ready to take it to another level. I am very proud of both of them."
Jordan, who will compete in the triple jump for the third consecutive season as the third seed, looks to garner All-American honors at the Outdoor Championships. Earlier this season, Jordan finished third overall in the event at the Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. to earn All-American honors for the second time at the Indoor Championships.
Jordan punched his ticket to Eugene after posting a leap of 54 feet, four inches at the NCAA Eastern Preliminary Round in Greensboro, N.C., on May 29, which was a new outdoor school record. The triple jump will be contested on Wednesday beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern/4 p.m. Pacific with the trials and finals both contested on Wednesday.
Marcelle will compete in the shot put for the fourth straight year at the Outdoor Championships and is looking to garner All-American honors in the event for the second straight season. Marcelle also earned All-American honors in the event at the Indoor Championships in February.
Marcelle secured his spot in the event after recording a mark of 59 feet, 10.5 inches at the NCAA Preliminary Meet and will be seeded 11th overall this weekend. The men's shot put will be contested on Saturday at 12:40 p.m. eastern/9:40 a.m. pacific.
The only woman to qualify for the Championships is sophomore Bianca Stewart, who will compete in the high jump on Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m. Eastern/2 p.m. Pacific. Stewart earned her spot in the event after a leap of five feet, 10 inches at the NCAA Preliminary Meet. The mark was a career-best for Stewart and was the fourth best mark in outdoor school history.
"We're excited about the opportunity Bianca has to compete at the NCAA National Championship meet this week and represent our women's program," said women's head coach Alan Drosky. "She did an outstanding job at the preliminary qualifying round in Greensboro to earn her way to Eugene. Back in the fall semester she was in my office telling me her goal was to get to Eugene so to see it happen is fantastic. She jumped a personal best height to reach this level and to clear one or two more bars this week would put her on the podium with a top eight finish."
