Angelo Taylor Named Team USA Men's Track Captain

July 25, 2012

THE FLATS – Former Georgia Tech All-American Angelo Taylor was selected by his teammates to be the captain of the Team USA men’s track squad for the 2012 London Olympics. Taylor will be joined in leading the United States contingent by fellow four-time Olympian Aretha Thurmond, the women’s team captain.

Taylor competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In Sydney and Beijing, he won the gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles. Taylor added a second gold in Beijing in the 4×400-meter relay.

“I’m definitely excited on being nominated and chosen to be the team captain,” Taylor told USA Track and Field. “I want to do my best to go out there and share my experience and give advice to some of the younger athletes out here for the first time. I’m here to help anyone who needs my help, and I am fully honored to be the captain.”

Taylor and Thurmond bring a lot of experience to the USA Olympic squad with a combined 10 USA Championship titles, eight Olympic appearances, four Olympic medals, and 32 years of experience competing at an international level.

One of their first tasks as Olympic team captains will be to meet with captains of all U.S. Olympic sports to select the flag bearer for the U.S. delegation.
