Tech Returns to Alabama for NCAA Regional Championships

Nov. 9, 2017

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country readies for a rematch against the southeast, this time in the NCAA Regional at Alabama on Friday, Nov. 10 at the Harry Pritchett Running Park in Tuscaloosa.

The women are scheduled to run at 10 a.m. eastern with the men beginning right after, around 11 a.m. eastern.

The men enter the weekend ranked No. 5 in the USTFCCCA South region, a one-spot drop from the previous ranking as Tech and ACC foe Florida State continue to leapfrog each other back and forth. The women fell four spots to eighth in the South region.

The last time the Yellow Jackets ran in the state of Alabama, the Tech women took first place and the men took third for one of the best total team performances of the year at the Crimson Classic. Senior Nahom Solomon is coming off the race of his career at the ACC Championship two weeks ago, finishing fourth with a career-best time. Christian Bowles (28th) and Avery Bartlett (29th) followed soon after, before Frank Pittman and Matt Munns rounded out the first five in 30th and 31st, respectively.

The women were led by Amy Ruiz in the Crimson Classic, running a 20:45.7 time, while Mary Prouty finished just two spots back. Hailey Gollnick, freshman Nicole Fegans and Mary Claire Solomon rounded out the top five for the Jackets, finishing 14th, 16th, and 28th, respectively.

Of the 34-team field, the men will face off against nationally ranked Alabama, Middle Tennessee and Ole Miss, as well as 15 regionally ranked opponents that include Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida.

The women will face a slightly larger 41-team field that includes nationally ranked Ole Miss and Georgia, as well as 17 regionally ranked programs that include Auburn, Florida State, Middle Tennessee, Southern Miss and Tennessee.

The women defeated Auburn, Alabama and Florida State, but will face Ole Miss and Georgia for the first time on the course. The men out-kicked Auburn while falling behind Alabama and Middle Tennessee and will face Ole Miss, Florida State, Georgia and Tennessee for the first time in Tuscaloosa.
