Kaela Davis Named to All-ACC First Team

March 3, 2015

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Kaela Davis of the Georgia Tech women’s basketball team has garnered All-ACC First Team honors from the ACC’s Blue Ribbon Panel, ACC Commissioner John Swofford announced on Tuesday.

“I am very proud of Kaela and how she has led a very young team this season,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “She has matured into a player that makes others better around her. She is very deserving of being named to the All-ACC First Team. Kaela has proven night in and night out that she is one of the best players in the ACC.”

Davis has been named to the All-ACC First Team by the Blue Ribbon Panel, which consists of media, school representatives and the ACC’s head coaches, after a stellar sophomore campaign. Davis is the fifth Jacket to earn All-ACC First Team accolades. Davis’ appointment on the All-ACC First Team marks the third-straight year Tech has had a player honored on the first team. Tyaunna Marshall was named All-ACC First Team in both 2013 and 2014. Davis was named to the All-ACC Second Team as a freshman.

Davis is the second Jacket under Joseph to garner the accolade. Tech’s three other All-ACC first team members are Kisha Ford (1997), Sonja Mallory (2003) and Ida Neal (1989).

Davis has been nothing short of impressive in her second season for the Jackets, averaging 20.1 points per game which leads the team and is second in the ACC. Her scoring average puts her at 29thin the nation. She leads all ACC players in scoring in conference games with 19.2 points per game.Davis became the fastest GT player to score 1,000 career points after scoring 24 pts at Notre Dame. She broke the record of 55 games, scoring 1,000 points in 52 games. She currently has 1,198 career points which ranks 19thon Georgia Tech’s all-time scoring list.

Davis is close to surpassing another Georgia Tech record. She has 604 points this season, which puts her just six points away from breaking the Georgia Tech record for the most points scored in a single season. Marshall holds the record after she scored 609 points during the 2014-15 season. Davis is just the second Yellow Jacket to score at least 600 points in a single season, joining Marshall on that list.

Recently, Davis led the Yellow Jackets in their upset of #16 Duke, which broke Georgia Tech’s 37-game losing streak to the Blue Devils. Davis scored 24 points against Duke, went 6-for-7 from the free throw line in the final 3:34 of the game and came up with a huge steal with 23 seconds left to help the Jackets secure the historic win.

The Suwanee, Ga. native, has scored in double figures in 29 out of 30 games this season and has scored at least 20 points in 14 games. Davis has recorded four 30 point games this season including a career-high 35 points against LA Tech. Davis is just one of three Yellow Jackets to have recorded at least four 30 point games in a single season.

Along with her 20.1 points per game, Davis is averaging 5.6 rebounds per game, 1.5 assists per game and 1.6 steals per game. She has led the Jackets in scoring in 20 games and in rebounding in four games. She was named to the Naismith Trophy Midseason Top 30 in February.

Davis and the Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday as the #11 seed in the 2015 ACC Tournament. Georgia Tech faces the #14 seed Clemson at 6:30 p.m. in the first round on RSN/ESPN3 at the Greensboro Coliseum.
