Bivins Awarded Charles T. Stoner Law Scholarship

ATLANTA – The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association has selected Georgia Tech redshirt senior Shayla Bivins as the 2014 recipient of the Charles T. Stoner Law Scholarship Award. The $1,000 Charles T. Stoner Law Scholarship Award, named for and presented by Stoner, a former legal consultant to the WBCA, is presented annually to one female collegiate basketball player who intends to pursue a career in law.

“I am pleased to present Shayla with the Charles T. Stone Law Scholarship Award,’ said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. “Shayla is one of the most impressive student athlete’s I have ever encountered during my career in women’s basketball. Any career path she chooses, she will be successful and will make an impact.”

Bivins is the third Yellow Jacket to earn the honor, joining current assistant coach Deja Foster (2011) and Jacqua Williams (2009) as the Tech recipients.

“We are very proud of the impact Shayla Bivins has had on our program,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “Her leadership has been instrumental in our success. We are very excited that the WBCA has selected her as the recipient of the Charles T. Stoner law scholarship.”

Bivins was named a captain of the 2013-14 Georgia Tech women’s basketball team after deciding to return for her redshirt season. After appearing in 41 career games with two career starts, Bivins has started every game of her senior season at center and is averaging 2.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game. She was named to the LIU Turkey Classic All-Tournament team in November.

The Jacksonville, Fla. native is a four time member of the ACC Honor Roll. Bivins is the President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board and is the Student Government Association Athletic Representative. She is highly involved in community service initiatives, including the Girls on the Run program. Bivins was named to the 2014 WBCA Allstate Good Works Team and was one of two student-athletes chosen to serve on the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee. Most recently Bivins was awarded the ACC Postgraduate Scholarship and was honored with the “Peach of an Athlete” award. She was also named to the All-ACC Academic Team.

Bivins will be formally recognized during the WBCA Awards Show, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. ET Monday, April 7, in the Omni Nashville Hotel’s Broadway Ballroom. This event is part of the WBCA National Convention and is held in conjunction with the NCAA® Women’s Final Four® in Nashville.

Bivins and the Yellow Jackets are currently preparing for the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Selection Show will air on Monday, March 17 at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
