A Look Back at Women's Basketball's 2013-14 Season

During the 2013-14 season, the Yellow Jackets completed its seventh 20 win season in the past eight years under head coach MaChelle Joseph. The Jackets also received its seventh at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament under Coach Joseph. Tech finished the season at 20-12 and seventh in the ACC with a 9-7 conference record.

Prior to the 2013-14 season, Joseph signed high school All-American and the number one recruit in the country, Kaela Davis. Davis, along with senior Tyaunna Marshall, helped the Jackets average 79.7 points per game in 2013-14 – the highest scoring average for a team under Coach Joseph. Marshall became the all-time leading scorer in school history and the first Jacket to score 2,000 points. She finished her career with 2,129 points and was named to the All-ACC First Team, ACC All-Defensive Team and the Georgia College Women’s Player of the Year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club for the second consecutive year.

Davis was honored on the All-ACC Second Team and ACC All-Freshman team. Davis was the fourth-straight All-ACC Freshman team honoree and sixth overall under Coach Joseph.

A Year of Milestones
The 2013-14 season featured numerous team and individual milestones for the Jackets.

213 wins in Coach Joseph’s career – she became the second coach in Tech history to reach 200 wins after defeating Portland State on Dec. 17, 2013. Joseph is just 11 wins away from becoming the winningest coach in Tech history.

85 made 3-pointers by Kaela Davis, which is second on Tech’s individual season records and ranks first in the ACC freshmen single-season records

79.7 points per game averaged by the Jackets which is the most under coach Joseph and the second highest scoring average in Tech history

MARSHALL NAMED ALL-AMERICA
Georgia Tech women’s basketball senior Tyaunna Marshall was named an honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press. Marshall was also named an honorable mention AP All-American in 2013, making her the first Yellow Jacket to garner All-America honors in back-to-back seasons. Marshall is just the second Yellow Jacket to earn recognition from the Associated Press. Kisha Ford was named an honorable mention AP All-American in 1997.

The All-America honor joins a long list of awards for Marshall that includes All-ACC First Team, ACC All-Defensive Team and the Georgia College Women’s Player of the Year, awarded by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

TECH TIDBITS
– Senior Tyaunna Marshall became Georgia Tech’s all-time leading scorer against #13/11 UNC on Feb. 6, 2014 after scoring 32 against the Tar Heels to break Kisha Ford’s record of 1,955 points. Marshall scored 20 points against Virginia to become the first Yellow Jacket and 24th ACC player to reach the 2,000 point mark. Her 2,129 career points which ranks 17th on the ACC’s career list.
– Marshall leads all active ACC players in career 20 point games with 41. She has 17 this season.
– Out of the Jackets’ 20 wins so far this season, 10 games have been won by 20 or more points with its biggest margin of victory being 50 points against Portland State.
– In 16 out of 32 games, the Jackets have scored at least 80 points. Tech is averaging 79.7 ppg.
– In 26 out of Tech’s 32 games, at least one Jacket has scored 20 points or more. Davis has scored 20+ in 13 games while Marshall has scored at least 20 in 16. Both Marshall and Davis scored more than 20 against UTEP, Clemson, #6 Maryland, #13 UNC, Virginia twice and Boston College.
Wallace hit the 20-point mark against Miami, Florida State and LSU and Whiteside scored 21 at Notre Dame and against Boston College -The Jackets were on a 15-game streak of outrebounding their opponents, until Virginia Tech edged the Jackets by one rebound. Tech has won the rebounding battle in 24 out of 32 games this season and average 44.0 rpg. The Jackets are 17-7 when they outrebound their opponent.
– The Yellow Jackets averaged an impressive 92 points per game at home during its non-conference portion of its schedule on its way to a 7-0 record at McCamish.

GEORGIA TECH IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
After losing to LSU, 98-78, in the first round, the Yellow Jackets are 5-9 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The Jackets have made the NCAA Tournament seven out of the last eight season under coach Joseph. Joseph is 5-7 in the NCAA Tournament, going 4-3 in the first round. In three out of their last five appearances, Tech has won its first round game.

Under Joseph’s direction, the Jackets have been named as high as a #4 seed (2012) and as low as a #10 seed (2008, 2014).

MARSHALL SELECTED 14TH IN THE WNBA DRAFT
Marshall was selected 14th overall by the New York Liberty in the second round of the 2014 WNBA Draft. Marshall is the eighth Georgia Tech player drafted and the sixth under head coach MaChelle Joseph.

Marshall is the fifth Yellow Jacket drafted in the second round of the WNBA Draft, joining Sonja Mallory (2003 – 24th overall pick), Kasha Terry (2006- 26th overall pick), Chioma Nnamaka (2008- 21st overall pick) and Brigitte Ardossi (2010 – 21st overall pick). Both Alex Montgomery (2011 – 10th overall pick) and Sasha Goodlett(2012- 11th overall pick) were chosen in the first round. Marshall is the fourth Yellow Jacket to be drafted to the New York Liberty, joining Kisha Ford(1997), Mallory (2003), and Montgomery (2011).

BY THE NUMBERS
An inside look at the statistical differences in the Yellow Jackets’ wins and losses:
– In wins, Tech is averaging 87.2 ppg. In losses, the Jackets have averaged 67.2 ppg.
– In wins, Tech allows only 66.9 ppg. In losses, opponents have tallied 79.7 ppg.
– In wins, opponents are shooting only 37.8 percent from the field. In losses, opponents are shooting at 45.9 percent.
– In wins, Tech is out-rebounding opponents by 9.9 boards per game. In losses, Tech is being out-rebounded by 3.7 per game.
– In wins, Tech is averaging 28 free throw attempts per game. In losses, the Jackets are only getting 18 attempts from the stripe.
– In wins, Marshall is averaging 20.9 ppg and Davis is averaging 19.7 ppg. Marshall averages 17.6 ppg and Davis averages 16.7 ppg in losses.

GEORGIA TECH’S ALL-TIME LEADING SCORER
Senior Tyaunna Marshall became Georgia Tech’s all-time leading scorer against #13/11 North Carolina on Feb. 6, 2014 after scoring 32 points against the Tar Heels to break Kisha Ford’s record of 1,955 points. She hit two free throws with 4.3 seconds left to break the record and secure the Jackets’ first win against a ranked opponent since 2012. Marshall is one of just five Yellow Jackets all-time with at least 1,500 career points and 600 career rebounds. With 609 points this season, Marshall is the first Jacket to score 500 points in three-straight seasons. With 20 points against LSU, Marshall broke Tech’s single season record of points in a single season of 596 points set by Joyce Pierce (1991-92). She was the first Jacket to score at least 600 points in one season, recording 609 as a senior.

Marshall became the first Yellow Jacket and 24th ACC player to score 2,000 career points after she scored 20 points against Virginia on Feb. 14. What is more remarkable is that Marshall has only made 20 3-pointers in her entire career – meaning that her 878 field goals and 353 made free throw shots. Marshall currently ranks 17th all-time in the ACC record book. Marshall leads all active ACC players in career 20 point games with 41. She has 17 this season.

DAVIS SETS ACC AND TECH FRESHMAN RECORD
Against Virginia in the ACC Tournament, Davis broke Karen Lounsbury’s (1988-89) freshman scoring record of 539 points with 578 points this season. Her 578 points also broke the ACC freshmen single season record for points scored. Davis topped Wake Forest’s Tracy Conner’s 576 points that were scored in 1992-93. She is just the third freshman to score 500 points in their first season on the Flats.

ALL-ACC
Georgia Tech senior Tyaunna Marshall has been selected to the All-ACC First Team and freshman Kaela Davis has been selected to both the All-ACC Second Team and All-Freshman Team by the ACC’s Blue Ribbon Panel, which consists of media and school representatives and the ACC’s head coaches. Marshall was also named to the ACC All-Defensive team by the league’s head coaches.

Marshall is the first Yellow Jacket to be named to the All-ACC First Team twice in her career. The 5′ 9″ guard was honored as a junior on the All-ACC First Team and was the first Jacket to be named to the All-ACC First Team since Sonja Mallory was selected to the team in 2003. Marshall is just the fourth Jacket to earn All-ACC First Team accolades. This is also Marshall’s second consecutive year being named to the All-Defensive Team. She is the fifth Yellow Jacket to be named to the All-ACC Defensive Team. Marshall joins Jacqua Williams (2008, 2009) as the only Jacket to garner All-ACC Defensive Team honors two seasons in a row.

After a stellar freshman season, Davis has been named to both the All-ACC Second Team and All-Freshman Team. Davis leads all ACC rookies with her 18.6 ppg and leads the Jackets with 2.7 made 3-pointers a game. In her freshman season, Davis recorded 14 20 point games and led the team in scoring in 15 games. Davis was named the Rookie of the Week four times this season.

REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK
Marshall cemented her name in the Tech record book in yet another category, this time for scoring the most points in a single season with 609. Marshall broke the previous record of 596 points set by Joyce Pierce in 1991-92 after scoring 20 points against LSU in the NCAA Tournament. Davis was also close to the record, for her 594 points has her third on Tech’s individual season points list. Also, Davis’ 85 made 3-pointers this season ranks second on Tech’s individual season record list for 3-pointers made.

Tech’s 2,549 points scored this season ranks second overall in Tech’s single season records.
