Women's Hoops Celebrates Season at Banquet

THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team celebrated its 2013-14 season Wednesday evening during its team banquet at the Callaway Club in McCamish Pavilion.

During the 2013-14 season, the Yellow Jackets completed its seventh 20 win season in the past eight years under head coach MaChelle Joseph. The Jackets also received its seventh at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament under Coach Joseph. Tech finished the season at 20-12 and seventh in the ACC with a 9-7 conference record.

During the team banquet, the Yellow Jackets handed out individual awards in a variety of categories. Sophomore Nariah Taylor took home the Most Improved Player Award. Taylor averaged 6.2 points per game while grabbing 3.3 rebounds per game this season. Last year as a freshman, Taylor averaged 1.9 ppg and 2.5 rpg.

Senior Tyaunna Marshall took home three awards tonight including the Rebound Award, Defensive Player of the Year and the Co-Offensive Player of the Year. Marshall became the all-time leading scorer in school history and the first Jacket to score 2,000 points. She finished her career with 2,129 points and was named to the All-ACC First Team, ACC All-Defensive Team and the Georgia College Women’s Player of the Year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club for the second consecutive year. She was also named an honorable mention AP All-American. Marshall was taken as the 14th overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft by the New York Liberty.

Freshman Kaela Davis shared the Co-Offensive Player of the Year award with Marshall. Davis broke Tech’s freshman individual season record, scoring 594 points and averaging 18.6 ppg in her rookie season. After a stellar freshman season, Davis was been named to both the All-ACC Second Team and All-Freshman Team. Davis led all ACC rookies with her 18.6 ppg and led the Jackets with 2.7 made 3-pointers a game. In her freshman season, Davis recorded 14 20 point games and led the team in scoring in 15 games. Davis was named the Rookie of the Week four times this season.

Senior Dawnn Maye was named the Assist Leader at the banquet. Maye averaged a team-high 3.1 assists per game this season. She led the team in total assists with 100 and was second in steals with 63. She led the Jackets in assists in 14 games and had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.6 that ranked ninth in the ACC … She is fourth on Tech’s all-time assist list with 412 career assists.

Senior Shayla Bivins, sophomore Roddreka Rogers and senior Frida Fogdemark were all honored with the Academic Excellence Award. Bivins was also awarded the MaChelle Joseph Hard Work Award. Bivins was just one of two student-athletes selected to serve on the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee. She was named to the 2014 Allstate WBCA Good Works Team and honored on the All-ACC Academic Team. Bivins was honored with the ACC Postgraduate Scholarship and named a Peach of Athlete, which is awarded by the Atlanta Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. She was also selected to receive the Charles T. Stoner Law Scholarship by the WBCA. This season, Bivins played in 32 games and started all 32 at center. She averaged 2.6 points per game and 3.9 rebounds per game.

The Kentrina Wilson Perseverance and Courage Award was given to junior Sydney Wallace. Wallace suffered a scary fall during the Florida State game after scoring 22 points in the first half against the Seminoles. She missed the next three games because of injury but returned to face LSU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Against LSU, she led the team scoring 20 points. Wallace averaged 9.8 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game this this season while averaging 1.8 made 3-pointers a game.

Sophomore Aaliyah Whiteside was honored with the Alex Steward Loyalty Award. Whiteside emerged over the second half of the conference season as a key player for the Jackets. She scored a career-high 21 points at #2/#2 Notre Dame while grabbing nine rebounds. Whiteside scored 18 points at Pittsburgh. She followed up her impressive offensive output with her first career double-double (10 pts, 11 reb.) against #13 UNC. Her 11 rebounds were a career-high. She matched her career-high against Boston College with 21 points. She averaged 7.8 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game.
